We've made it thru February & another week. The weekend is almost here. Looks to be another sunny day. Hoping the March saying isn't true; If is comes in like a lamb, it goes out like a lion. Hoping the weather guys are right when they say by mid March, the Spring will arrive & it will warm up & all the white stuff will be gone.

Ontario government advises school boards to freeze hiring

It sounds like there's a freeze on hiring teachers in Ontario. According to an education ministry memo obtained by The Star, school boards are being told to hold off on all new hires for the next school year until further notice. The document asks boards to exercise prudence in light of the upcoming budget. The premier has made it clear that he's looking for efficiencies, as well as a recent consultation on class size and hiring practises.

Group to protest changes to Ontario autism program

Expect a loud and angry group to gather outside the premier's Etobicoke office over the lunch hour today to protest recent changes to the province's autism program. Last month, social services minister Lisa MacLeod announced funding changes, which will leave some parents who have children requiring more intensive therapy and treatment scrambling to make up the difference. Families will get up to $20,000 per year for children under the age of 6, $5,000 a year for those six to 18, with a lifetime cap at $140,000. MacLeod has said this will eliminate a 23,000 person waiting list. A larger protest is set for the legislature next week.

Leafs blownout, Tavares booed in his return to Long Island

It wasn't exactly the warmest welcome for former Islanders captain John Tavares last night. The Long Island crowd booed him loud and often and chanted "we don't need you". The Maple Leafs went on to lose 6-1 with Zach Hyman getting the lone goal for Toronto. The loudest boos came during the video tribute for Tavares, who spent 9 seasons with the team before last summer’s trade to the Leafs.

Just what is the Day of Unplugging? Well, it is no secret that we are increasingly connected to the world around us. Smartphones, tablets, WiFi access and the Internet have enabled us to be connected to the entire world 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, every single day of the year. Celebrating this day is quite simple. All that one is required to do is to disconnect from the virtual “matrix” which has come to define every waking moment of our lives. So power down that laptop, leave the smartphone at home and avoid email for twenty-four hours. Instead, take a walk in a local park.

Katherine Helmond, best-known as the man-crazy mother Mona on ’80s sitcom 'Who’s the Boss?' has died at the age of 89.


Helmond was a seven-time Emmy nominee, and aside from Who’s the Boss and Soap, starred on Everybody Loves Raymond as Lois Whelan, on Coach as the widowed owner of an NFL team, and most recently on vampire drama True Blood as Caroline Bellefleur.

She won two Golden Globes, both for Best Supporting Actress. She won for Who’s the Boss in 1989 and for Soap in 1981.
She wasn’t only a star on TV; she appeared in many movies as well, including three Terry Gilliam films — 1981’s Time Bandits, 1985’s Brazil and 1998’s Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

Live coverage: Critical Crew Dragon test launch set for Saturday

SpaceX and NASA are gearing up for a critical launch Saturday with a Falcon 9 rocket and the new Crew Dragon spacecraft, a precursor to the resumption of launches with astronauts from the Kennedy Space Center for the first time since the space shuttle’s retirement in 2011. The unpiloted test flight is scheduled for liftoff at 2:49 a.m. EST (0749 GMT) Saturday.


A commercial Earth-imaging satellite owned by DigitalGlobe captured a stunning view of the Falcon 9 rocket horizontal at pad 39A Thursday afternoon. The company tweeted the photo, captured by the WorldView 1 satellite at 2:46 p.m. EST (1946 GMT) as it orbited 410 miles (660 kilometers) south of New Orleans over the Gulf of Mexico.
WorldView 1 pointed its telescope toward the east to capture the "high off-nadir" view.
