My husband and I have been having back pain, it's worse in the morning and I suspect it's our mattress. The pain pretty much starts when we get up and dissipates during the day. The current mattress is only 3 years old and is one of the big company ones (either Serta or Sealy).

I think we're going to look in the Sleep Number ones or the memory foam ones (Essentia - natural memory form, similar to Tempurpedic). These are really expensive (several thousands), but I hope it would make a difference.

Does anyone (especially back pain sufferers) have a mattress to recommend?

I just bought a new bed 1 week ago. It is a kingsdown "perrenial" I love it!! My husband and I have not been sleeping well for years and I have cronic back pain. We have been sleeping so well this week, we are not tired and my back pain has decreased substantially.

We bought it at Sleep Country and we got a fantastic deal on it. I recomend you get quotes (in writting) from as many stores you can, getting everyone to beat each others best offer. Then take it to Sleep Country, they will beat it and give you another 5% off.

We ended up gettting a king beacause it was such a great deal. We got the mattress set, a bedframe, pillows , mattress pad, king sheet set, delivery and pick up of old set, 10 yrs warranty, couple bottles of stain remover, and a couple bottles of mattress refresher for way under $1500

Plus they have the 60 night guarentee, that if in that time you don't like your new set, you pay $50 and they will take back your set and you can get another one.

I am very happy with my purchase, and my body is loving it!

    Good luck

I'm pretty sure I have a Sealy but I dont have back pain and love my mattress. My parents I belive have a kingsdown as well though, it's softer than mine but I prefer firm mattresses.

We looked into that 'number' mattress and having read all the reviews, we weren't impressed. Luckily for us, we happened to check into a hotel which uses them (Ramada, I think?) and we hated it!
Neither of us could get comfortable!

We opted for a pretty high-end foam mattres which was on sale and I worried about back pain which is from two degenerated discs but it's wonderful! My Mom had one for many, many years and it's still in perfect condition..ie..no sagging.

We were also smart enough to purchase the mattress pad/cover from Leon's and it's THE best! It has a leak-proof barrier which isn't at all noticeable...when my hubby bled in bed from surgery, it never touched the mattress.

And by all means, lay on them in the store. It's the only way you can tell how it feels...stay there...relax...ahhhhh....like it? Buy it! LOL!!

I would just like to throw in my 2 cents about the mattresses that have the extra topping. I have a Serta 17" it has the extra 4 inches on top which is seperate. I hate it. First of all you can't ever turn it over. All you can do is turn one end or the other. It gets too soft and makes a body dent in where you sleep. I will never make this mistake again. It is only 5 years old and I really can't wait to get rid of it.

It looks like this. If I could rip those 4 inches off the top I would. LOL

Since your bed isn't that old, try putting a board (1/2 inch plywood) between the mattress and boxspring.

    Moderate firmness is best

    Thanks for the replies everyone!

Patty, that's the type of mattress I have and I hate it as well! I wonder if it's the pillow top that is giving us back pain. I want to rip mine off as well.

We have the same bed Patty! and I agree...not the best one I have slept on. When we upgrade to a king size we are not getting a pillow top!
