I'm doing my 5th year of high school, and I'm taking business courses for the first time. I'm having some difficulty with my homework, so I was wondering if people could help me to point me in the right direction. (I'll be asking my teacher about a million questions about the homework tomorrow when I'm in class.)
The course is international business, and I have to list 3 advantages and 3 disadvantages of a self-sufficient society. For an advantage I listed shipping costs eliminated, and as a disadvantage I listed small variety in products. What are other things I could list?
(I might be asking for a lot of help with business courses, so if anyone could find a website with information for me to look over I would really appreciate it)This thread is currently associated with: N/A

Advantage: not being reliant on others
Disadvantage: Increased cost for some products that could be produced more cheaply elsewhere

You know, when I was in high school there was no internet. (OMG it's true!) We went to the library and read, researched and read more and more and more. I think you aren't giving yourself enough credit here. You have so much information available to you at your fingertips, you just need the initiative to do it yourself kiddo!
It's different if you don't understand something, but asking people to do your work and research for you won't help you down the road, in a test, an exam or in university/college/work force. It's best you figure out now how to be self sufficient in doing your own work. I know you may think I'm a jerk for saying that, but it's not meant in a jerk way. I promise you that!
Good luck and start reading!

Advantage: no outsourced jobs, better economy (more jobs created etc)
Disadvantage: depleted resources over time, product unavailability (think citrus fruits, bananas, coffee, oil etc in Canada, or anything that is hard to grow/mine in a specific country)
I'm in College getting a business degree LOL!Last edited by roseofblack25; Wed, Sep 7th, 2011 at 05:23 PM.

haha yes I would second not mentioning that to your teacher!! Best not to give the teacher a reason to hate you on the second day of class.
In all probability it won't happen because we rely too much on other countries for materials and resources we can't get or produce ourselves here.
I think it's more a hypothetical question like a what if situation.

I actually didn't mean "give me answers", I meant to ask for resources. I was also frustrated when I posted this. I pulled out some things from my own research (thank goodness for finding old university textbooks); I'm just looking for one last disadvantage. If I can't find my last one I'm definitely going to my teacher in the morning for clarification. I totally understand where your coming from, so don't worry

I just have a horrible time with the internet and electronics, so I need help with internet resources.

The internet will give you almost all the answers you need about anything. It's like having a library in your house. Coincidentally, I had a discussion about using the internet as a school resource with my daughter this afternoon, and this is part of what I told her: And this is just advice for someone new to internet research.
Never, ever, EVER, copy-paste material from the internet and present it as your own. If you use other people's words, you MUST cite where they came from. Otherwise you are guilty of plagiarism. A fancy word for cheating, and your teacher will catch you. Reading articles online and presenting them in your own words is perfectly fine, copying is not.
Catching plagiarists is extremely easy. All a teacher has to do is type a few sentences from your essay into Google, and if they have been previously posted elsewhere, Google will show where from.
I'm not saying you would ever intentionally cheat, it's just that schools have strict rules about how you present the information you have gathered, and being unfamiliar with internet research, I'd hate to see you get in trouble unintentionally.Last edited by DaveP; Thu, Sep 8th, 2011 at 03:58 AM.

as a professor and sociologist I would caution you from trusting this you read on the internet and only use reputable sources. Also, for those who responded to my comment I think saying it won't happen shows insight and a deeper level of thought...rather than accepting whatever we are told it is ok to think outside the box and critically examine things for ourselves...unfortunately from what I have seen homeschool is teaching this less and less.

Disadvantage, lack of foreign relations (think of it as good will between nations). A mix between politics and business. In anycase, if you're overwhelmed/can't think straight go do cardio for 30 minutes. You'll be able to better focus on the task at hand (something I did in university, went running in the indoor track during breaks when writing essays or studying).

well if you were a self-sufficient society what would be your advantages that you saw out before ya and what drawbacks would ya see?
I remember this question well we were asked this in Geography 12...funny they made it into something more along the lines of course involving business...
well if i was my own little society the 3 advantages i would see is that I was self reliant, make my own rules, my profit margin made great climbs. Drawbacks i suppose would be importing goods that I couldn't get, paying high taxes, and having land disputes with neighbouring societies who wanted mine for theirs.
instead of pressuring yourself with always coming up with the answer out of a textbook...think outside the box or put yourself inside the box wearing the shoes of that society...like what would you do if you were the society. besides I am sure there is always a society out there looking to steal another societies ideas lol.Live, Love, Laugh
