Thanks Bob. I will look right now what my cost of the flight will be before taxes and divide it out. But the idea of buying shell gas cards and putting the cash aside seems like a great option too.
My husband and I went to San Fran 2 years ago and the kids to Disneyland last year. Both times we cashed in our AM's for BW giftcards plus we have CAA. It was perfect because it did cover room taxes and everything. Plus now we need the option to cancel. So booking the rooms through AM's is a no go then.

Cheers, Bob, there's a reason not to go there this week.

Two miscellaneous items--there is an app called , which gets you access to just about all CDN. flyers in your area, EXCEPT SAFEWAY (I mean even some obscure stores/chains that I didn't know were around my neck of the woods). Anyhow, as users of the app have said, handy for price matching--cheeky, this means you, too, I suppose.

Also got an invite to upgrade to TD's new Aeroplan VISA--no fee for first year, but is it really a good deal?? I need another credit card fee, like I need another hole in my head. Again, just throwing it out there for general feedback.

Depends on the extras I suppose. I upgraded to BMO's World Elite $150/year.

It came with $300 in flight/hotel points and no charge for travel trip cancellation & medical ($2,000,000, unlimited 21 day trips)

First year was waived but as I'd recently paid for the Gold Card ($104 two cards) they're refunding me the pro-rated amount + the trip/medical I paid separately for (31 day unlimited) and giving me a second year free. I paid $99/year extra for trip medical with te Gold card.

The World Elite came with 4 complimentary airport lounge visits ($27/visit after) and 3 City Pass booklets of my choice (Major Cities only but could save hundreds) as well.

Certainly upgrading this card saves me hundreds of $$$$s and if the advantages disappear I'll drop it in 2 years. The only disadvantage was losing the 25% airmile discount (although they gave me the option of keeping that card but I decided the extra costs to keep it negated the discount).

The banks are jumping into credit cards big time now. They used to let others issue them. Now they are issuing directly themselves. Programs such as Airmiles of the past were the most consumer advantageous because the newer cards means retailers boost the prices they charge to cover the rebates of these cards. Over the last 5 years there's been a major shift in how Canadians use credit cards. The banks have realized we're addicted to points and are putting virtually all purchases on CCs now. Before it was major items only. There's a clean 2% profit to companies issuing CCs and because of the shift in spending habits the banks are now interested in the greater total dollars available.

If you do buy Shell Cards make sure it's their card and not a Shell MasterCard GC as they have activation fees. The strategy works with any Merchant GC you regularly deal with.

One thing I've thought of is we should petition Shell to offer BW or other hotel GCs. We'd get all the advantages of before and beat Airmiles out of their usurious "Loyalty Fee".

Came across these sites in an article in the Weekend G&M about maximizing a travel budget:

http://travelhacking.org/ ($1 for 14 days to check it out??? Might be worth it.)

    http://www.canadianfreeflyers.com/ ($2 for 14 days then $15-$20/mo. after)

However, I think we do all right here by ourselves without a fee.

Valentine's sweets, and that 5 lb. lasagna again...this time at a decent price 8.99$--no AM--better than $12.99 with 10 AM, from two weeks ago

So if we trundle in and buy four, we pay tax on 18$ I believe, which will change the math, and the net cost after AM is still more than we can get it for at other locations (WM and SDM have them for $1.99 on occasion). Safeway--how is this an EXTREME BONUS for us--might be a bonus for your bottom line, but that's it!

SDM has the 6 x 710ml on Sunday & Monday @ $2.50 L4. That beats Safeway and you can pick up SDM points as well. (If you do a B$100G100 shop then Safeway is a little ahead but barely).

Safeway has Heinz beans on for $1. Fairway is BOGO making them $0.79 each.

Safeway does beat Wally World on packaged cheese though. Wally World has Cracker Barrel 700g for $8.97. Safeway with coupon is $4.99 for 500g for Black Diamond. You just have to decide if the taste difference merits the 33% more for Cracker Barrel:

    Pro-rated that's $6.99/700g.
