That was last night's DCG word, no?

Al announced early this morning that a new DCG word would be coming up after Legends of Rock (on now). Just posting this heads up as I have to take my leave and I don't want us to "Get Fooled Again".

    Later Folks.

    In case you hadn't heard

This brand spanking new Airbus 340-600, the largest passenger airplane ever built, sits just outside its hangar in Toulouse , France without a single hour of airtime.
Enter the Arab flight crew of Abu Dhabi Aircraft Technologies (ADAT) to conduct pre-delivery tests on the ground, such as engine run-ups prior to delivery to Etihad Airways in Abu Dhabi .
The ADAT crew taxied the A340-600 to the run-up area. Then they took all four engines to takeoff power with a virtually empty aircraft. Not having Read the run-up manuals, they had no clue just how light an empty A340-600 really is. The takeoff warning horn was blaring away in the cockpit because they had all 4 engines at full power.
The aircraft computers thought they were trying to take off, but it had not been configured properly (flaps/slats, etc..). Then one of the ADAT crew decided to pull the circuit breaker on the Ground Proximity Sensor to silence the alarm.
This fools the aircraft into thinking it is in the air. The computers automatically released all the brakes and set the aircraft rocketing forward.
The ADAT crew had no idea that this is a safety feature so that pilots can't land with the brakes on. The extent of injuries to the crew is unknown due to the
news blackout in the major media in France and elsewhere.
Coverage of the story was deemed insulting to Muslim Arabs.
Finally, the photos are starting to leak out.
Airbus $200 million aircraft meets retaining wall and the wall wins
Well, the A-340 is not the largest passenger aircraft ever built.
It was in fact an Airbus employee at the controls.
The investigation showed no evidence of a safety system being overridden.
It was fully covered in the media in France, just not that newsworthy elsewhere since it was not a plane crash in the conventional sense.

I have no doubt that it received minimal, if any, coverage in the UAE media since they do not report anything that reflects negatively on the government or on state-owned companies, like Etihad.

I had seen this before but didn't remember the details. I had to look into it again because it had that 'internet rant' tone about it, which almost always includes a shot against other cultures or religions. Big red there that someone has played fast and loose with the truth. Example - there is a very good chance that the employees of ADAT were not Arabs. Most UAE workers are from other countries. Most of the technical and engineering people I have met down there are from India or Eastern Europe.

Another big city memory for me was going downtown with my dad to watch the Skycrane helicopter as it lifted the top sections of the CN Tower into position. Totally cool!

When the tower opened a year or so later, my dad took me downtown again for a ride up those speedy elevators. The best memory for me was watching the airplanes taking off and landing on the island airport from above. I'm pretty sure that's what got me interested in becoming a pilot.

Good morning, everyone. Off to have a late brunch/early lunch with a friend. Maybe even people watch in the sunshine if it warms up a bit more.

Depending on what time I get back, I may take the cat out to sit on the front bench & entertain the tourists.

    Have a great day!

Good point Peter. Most of the pilots and aircraft mechanics in the UAE, including those at Etihad and GAMCO, are expats from Europe and North America. As for coverage of the event in the UAE, even Etihad employees only learned of it second hand on the internet and from friends who sent them emails with pictures. A friend of mine is a pilot there and he didn't hear about it for almost a week, thanks to an email from me.

I haven't heard an official report but an editor at Air Transport Intelligence said he found it hard to believe that an ADAT engineer was in control of the tests and that all of a sudden all the rules got broken because ADAT came along.
The 'hard to believe' factor is always a good indicator that takes me straight to Snopes.

Nice photo indeed, but since the second TD tower was completed in 1969, Centreville would have been in operation already for a couple of years.

Try reading this posting while you beat on your chest like King Kong. Hear how funny your voice sounds? That's how your voice sounds in a helicopter, and it's the reason I didn't become a chopper pilot!

Good point. I also remember a school trip to Centreville, but I don't remember if it was the same day that we went up the TD Centre. Probably, 'cause school trips to the big city were pretty rare in those days.
