RIP to a man who has brought all of us so much joy
TV, film legend Garry Marshall dies at 81
Marshall broke into showbiz in the late 1950s as a joke writer, eventually earning his way to becoming a writer on The Tonight Show with Jack Paar. In 1970, Marshall adapted his first TV hit, The Odd Couple, from a play with writing partner Jerry Belson. He went on to create sitcoms Happy Days, Laverne & Shirley (which starred his sister, Penny Marshall) and Mork & Mindy (which introduced the world to Robin Williams).
In the '80s, Marshall turned his talents to feature films, finding his first hit with The Flamingo Kid (1984), followed by Overboard (1987) and Beaches (1989).
The hits kept coming, from 1990's Pretty Woman (which propelled Julia Roberts to stardom), 1999's Runaway Bride and 2001's The Princess Diaries (which made Anne Hathaway a household name).
Then came the celebrity-filled, holiday-themed comedies: 2010’s Valentine’s Day, 2011’s New Year’s Eve and this year, Mother's Day.
He was also a memorable actor, starring in '90s films such as Soapdish and A League of Their Own and serving as the micro-managing network president throughout the course of Murphy Brown's run on television. More recently, he appeared on episodes of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Bojack Horseman and Hot in Cleveland.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, nurse Barbara Sue Marshall; two sisters, Ronny Hallin and Penny Marshall; three children, Lori, a writer, Kathleen, a theatre producer, and Scott, a film and TV director; and six grandchildren.

In 1961 he moved to Hollywood, where he teamed up with Jerry Belson as a writer for television. The pair worked on The Dick Van Dyke Show, The Joey Bishop Show, The Danny Thomas Show, and The Lucy Show.
In the early 1980s, Marshall met Hector Elizondo while playing basketball and became great friends. Elizondo appears in every movie that Marshall directed, beginning with Marshall's first feature film, Young Doctors in Love. Elizondo once noted that he is written into all of Marshall's contracts whether he wanted to do the movie or not.[12] In the opening credits of Exit to Eden, their eighth movie together, Elizondo is credited "As Usual ... Hector Elizondo".

David Huddleston, the actor who played the title character in the 1998 film “The Big Lebowski,” died Tuesday, the Los Angeles Times reported. He was 85.
Born in Vinton, Virginia, in 1930, the veteran actor boasted credits that also included 2005’s “The Producers,” “Santa Claus: The Movie” and the 1974 Mel Brooks classic “Blazing Saddles.”
Huddleston’s decades-long career also included Broadway work, as well as television roles on programs such as “The West Wing,” “Jericho,” “Gilmore Girls” and “The Wonder Years.”
While he is best known for “The Big Lebowski,” the actor’s wife told the Times that he believed his “crowning achievement” was playing Ben Franklin in the Broadway production of “1776” in 1997.

He went on to play the character in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, as well as the three Star Wars prequels from 1999 to 2005.
Baker also appeared in a number of other much-loved films in the 1980s, including The Goonies, Time Bandits and Flash Gordon.
His niece, Abigail Shield, paid tribute to her uncle. She told the Guardian: “It was expected, but it’s sad nonetheless. He had a very long and fulfilled life. He brought lots of happiness to people and we’ll be celebrating the fact that he was well loved throughout the world. We’re all very proud of what he achieved in his lifetime.”
Baker and Shield’s father, Ian, grew up in Birmingham. She said: “When he was a child, he was told that he probably wouldn’t survive through puberty, being a little person in those times, they didn’t have a very good life expectancy. He did extremely well in his life. He was very ill for the last few years so we had been expecting it. He had been looked after by one of his nephews, who found him on Saturday morning.”
Baker met his wife Eileen after an appearance on the Michael Parkinson TV chat show. She wrote in and said she was a little person too and wanted to meet him. “They got married soon after,” Shield said. “Sadly she died of epilepsy about 20 years ago.”
Shield added: “He had problems with his lungs and was often in a wheelchair. He was very poorly for a long time. He was asked to go out to LA for the new Star Wars premiere but he was told he was too ill to travel. Luckily he did manage to meet George Lucas again when he came to Manchester.”

Didn't know his name, but sure know his work.
Fyvush Finkel dies at 93
Finkel’s career began long before his appearance as a lawyer on David E. Kelley’s 1990s series Picket Fences, which earned him an Emmy in 1994
He became known as a Yiddish theater actor, having kicked off his career at age 9 in the Yiddish Theater District in New York’s Lower East Side. Finkel made his Broadway debut in the original 1964 production of Fiddler on the Roof as Mordcha, the innkeeper, and participated in several productions of the show throughout his career, including some rounds as Tevye in the national touring company.
After appearing in a small role in Sidney Lumet’s 1990 film Q&A, Kelley cast Finkel on Picket Fences, which ran from 1992 to 1996. Their working relationship continued when Finkel landed a role as a history teacher on Boston Public, which aired from 2000 to 2005.
Finkel continued acting even after that, appearing in the 2009 film A Serious Man, as well as episodes of Kelley’s Harry’s Law in 2011 and Blue Bloods in 2013.
Finkel is survived by his two sons, Ian and Elliot, brother Nat, three grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

Steven Hill, District Attorney Adam Schiff on 'Law & Order,' Dies at 94
Steven Hill, the stoic actor who was an original castmember on both the 1960s iconic television series Mission: Impossible and the ground-breaking 1990s drama Law & Order, died Tuesday.
When Mission: Impossible debuted in 1966 on CBS, it was Hill, as Daniel Briggs, who originally led the covert Impossible Missions Force.
Briggs also was the first to hear the show's iconic catchphrase, "This tape will self-destruct in five seconds." But in the pilot episode, he actually received his mission on an LP and was told, "As usual, this recording will decompose one minute after the breaking of the seal."
Nearly a quarter-century later, Hill made his mark in Law & Order as no-nonsense District Attorney Adam Schiff. Starting with the show's debut on NBC in 1990, Hill anchored the legal side of the long-running procedural for its first 10 seasons
Hill, though, perhaps was at his best on the stage. One of the original members of The Actors Studio, the renowned New York school founded in 1947, Hill was a standout among such fellow performers as Montgomery Clift, Julie Harris and Marlon Brando.
Many other acting credits on stage, tv, and film
