Well I had quite the scary situation Saturday and landed in the ER fearing I was in Ketosis, so I don't think I'll be every considering a ketogenic diet. EVER. I was falling down and tested my sugars which rang in at 27.8 so I went to emerg and spent 12 hrs trying to get it to stabilize. Thankfully I did NOT go into Ketosis and they gave me 2 litres of Salin, some insulin, etc and although I didn't go into Ketosis, DKA or anything of that nature, as a diabetic I can't imagine willfully putting my body into such a state knowing how I felt Saturday.

Consuming that much fat will make your sugar go high
http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases...0522114536.htm
"The study also underscores how very short-term changes in diet such as high-fat eating for only a few days, perhaps even less, can induce a state of insulin resistance,"

The OP, as a diabetic, is already past the stage of insulin resistance, so this article is basically stating the obvious in her case, i.e. that the bcl10 protein was present in her system. If she was eating low-carb, it doesn’t explain how the fat was being converted into excess sugars for her blood to get so high.

lecale, it wasn't a fun experience I assure you. I wasn't on the letogenic diet but knowing how I felt and with the panic of thinking I was potentially in ketosis was enough for me not to consider that type of diet. I do have a dietician that my Oncologist referred me to but I only see her every 4 months. She would prefer I do a plant based diet and I've been reluctant but I have started this week focusing more on the veg and lean proteins and staying away from red meat and pork, sugar and processed foods. I've also been trying the eating every 3 hrs or so by munching on carrots or celery as a mid morning and afternoon snack.
Patty, It was crazy, actually the triage nurse told me my monitor must not be working because it couldn't be that high, she said that I shouldn't be walking if it's that high. Granted I was walking while holding on tightly to my Husband. She took my blood with her monitor and she wouldn't let me see it but said it was 15.8 (not sure if she was trying to calm me or something) but the labwork came back and confirmed the higher glucose reading. The Dr I got was VERY thorough, I'm there for out of control glucose but my chart read that I had a brain tumour and once he found out I had a sinus infection he ordered a sinus Xray to look for any growth there. As told to me, out of control glucose can be a sign of active cancer cells and since those that have Crainiotomys are prone to have sinus polyps or tumours grow after surgery, he was just being cautious. It came back clear thankfully, other than the sinus infection.
blueeyetea, I wasn't actually following the ketogenic diet and quite thankful I wasn't. The culprit as to why they were so high is still trying to be determined. Right now I'm doing my own "controlled test" of checking my glucose before/after each time I take a new pill my Neurologist gave me for headaches which is known to spike or dive glucose levels.
DH666, thanks I'm feeling alot better since my sugars are down, still high (10.4 when I woke up this morning) but nowhere near where they were on the weekend. It was down to 7.8 before dinner tonight so it's at least going in the right direction. Mind you I'm taking 10 units of levemir at night before bed and my pills in the morning but it's at least working to get me regulated again.
Patty, feeling SO much better thanks! I started yesterday with eating majority of veg and I believe that will play a HUGE part in regulating my glucose.Last edited by TaraF; Tue, Oct 2nd, 2012 at 07:35 PM.

You are such a freaking trooper. Keep it up and you seem to be so lucky with great Doctors.

I use cinnamon and amla to control my blood sugar.
http://nutritionfacts.org/video/amla-versus-diabetes/
6 weeks after I went vegan I had a blood test done and my A1C was 5.7 and my cholesterol was below what my doctor wanted it to be on Lipitor so it does work. I practically do not consider myself diabetic since I dropped animal products from my diet as well as added oils and most processed foods.

Patty, I've been so incredibly lucky with the Drs I've encountered, you got that right! I'd rather they be over cautious than not cautious enough.
Thanks for the link, I'm listening to it now. I have a few questions, where do you get amla and how do you consume it? Over food? By the tsp?Last edited by TaraF; Tue, Oct 2nd, 2012 at 10:46 PM.

As in the video, I went to an Indian grocery store and asked for it. I use the powder and I put a teaspoon in a few ounces of almond milk and stir up up and drink it. It's a little bitter, but not too bad. I always put cinnamon in my breakfast cereal or oatmeal. I take my B12 in the morning too so I'm covered for the whole day.
I haven't tried amla any other way, but I'm sure there's something out there. The powder is $3.00 for a 200g bag.

Someone is either diabetic or isn't. If your case, your blood test proves you aren’t.
How much do you think cinnamon and amla are contributing to controlling your blood sugars, as opposed to everything else you’re doing? One hundred percent? Sixty percent? You admit yourself that you stopped eating processed food. You don’t think just that change in your diet might have been the main contributor to making your body more sensitive to insulin.
What does your doctor think when you tell him about cinnamon and amla?
