Hi Everyone,
I've been on hiatus for a few weeks and have had some big ups and downs. Although I had some really emotionally difficult things to deal with (I've had to have my dear Sherry cat put down ), I have now successfully defended my Ph.D. I now feel like walking around and telling people that "I am the doctor..." although I think most people would just want to have me committed for that instead of either getting the reference or its significance. Now just to make all my changes in the next 14 days so that I can graduate on time in October! This thread is currently associated with: N/A

Getting your doctorate is a very impressive achievement; what field is this in? What are you going to be when you grow up?

Thank you so much for the well-wishes, everyone. The Ph.D. is in criminology. My dissertation is entitled: "Negotiating the Margins: Aging Women and Homelessness in Ottawa." It focuses on the experiences of women aged 50 and over who are homeless and at risk of homelessness in Ottawa. It builds on my work at the women's homeless shelter and my past years doing research on older women in conflict with the law.
I was very distraught all weekend about my kitty. She has been a wonderful companion for the past 9 years since I adopted her from the humane society. She was a bit of a challenge to look after as she had been abused before her time at the humane society. She really loved me and was the best kitty for me (very affectionate and closely bonded with me) but basically, I was the only person in the world that she trusted (not even DH could pet her), and I had to spend a lot of time comforting her whenever we had guests at the house or after someone came to the door. One of my committee members said the nicest thing to me yesterday, though: she pointed out that without me, my kitty would've never known unconditional love or had the chance to show how loving she could be to anyone. It made me cry (then again, anything about Sherry makes me cry lately), but was also the sweetest thing that I could imagine at the time. It's what I'm focusing on now... that, and the relief of being done the defence (which had been stressing me out).

Oh, what a lovely thought to hold onto...all critters deserve to be loved and cared for if they find themselves in the world, in my opinion anyway...I wish I could take them all in. You did a wonderful, caring thing, Hon...one that would have been too much of a challenge for many people.
And yes...I hope that you get very spoiled this week and weekend, Hon!

A huge congratulations to you! That is an amazing accomplishment - to completely wrap up your PhD and have that distinction. I am very proud of you Also, I can't imagine finishing that all up and possibly battling morning sickness.
I am so sorry to hear about your kitty. Your committee member was right though - you were a saviour to her and she loved you for it.
I cannot wait to follow in your footsteps with the defense.
