I was wondering how many of you on SC still celebrate the traditional meal on Christmas Eve. Some friends were invited to a meal with their family and got me curious as to how many still do this. Wishing you all a very merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Yahoo!!!
I like Ukrainian Churches. I cruised Sask back roads a few summers ago and found tons of them NW of Saskatoon. Here is an example of one.

Yay! Thank you for remembering Judstir! How thoughtful. Merry Christmas to all the Ukrainians on SC!
When me and DH were in university we used to celebrate Christmas in January even though we aren't Ukrainian. Why? Because we were too poor at Christmas to be able to buy gifts for each other; just buying for our family wiped us out in December. So we always hosted a Christmas feast of our own to coincide with Ukrainian Christmas and we would exchange gifts at that time when we had a little bit more money again. Even though we don't do it anymore, it still makes me smile every January to think of it!"Be yourself. Everyone else is already taken." Oscar Widle

Merry Christmas to all!
And what is kutya? I'm pretty sure you don't mean canines (kutya = dog in Hungarian).

Pope Benedict sends greetings to the Eastern Orthox churches
Benedict XVI expressed his best wishes to the Churches of the East, which - according to the Julian calendar - celebrate Christmas tomorrow. Among the Eastern Churches, only the Armenian Apostolic Church celebrates the birth of Jesus. Speaking today before praying the Angelus with pilgrims gathered in St. Peter's Square, the Pope turned to the Churches of the East with his "warmest wishes of peace, with a special remembrance in prayer" for " the joy of the common faith. "
The Catholic Church - which follows the Gregorian calendar, today celebrates the Epiphany, the manifestation of Christ to the pagan peoples, symbolized by the Wise Men. "This slight difference - explained the pope - which is superimposes the two moments, highlights that the child, born in the humility of the cave of Bethlehem, is the light of the world, which directs the path of all peoples. It is an approach that makes us think from the point of view of faith: on the one hand, at Christmas, in front of Jesus, we see the faith of Mary, Joseph and the shepherds, and today, the Epiphany, the faith of the Wise Men, coming from afar to worship the King of the Jews. "
Short answer : no Long answer : NOOOOOOOOOOO!

Христос народився! Славіте Його!
(Khristos narodivsya) (Slavite Yoho)
Christ is born! Let us glorify Him!
Last night, we only had perogies and fish - only two of the 12 traditional dishes for Christmas Eve supper. We celebrate more on the Gregorian calendar, and even then don't do all the dishes, since there are only three of us.
I really, really miss having kutia - it's a very important start to the Holy Supper. It's made of cooked wheat, sweetened with honey, with poppyseeds and nuts.
