^ our city has been working really hard on getting people to do the zipper merge, particularly with so much construction. But some people just see others as butter-inners and won't do it.

Most people basically do the zipper merge at the sign, but there are always a few that speed ahead until they can go no further then expect to be allowed to cut in. Either way there would be a back up in traffic as there is really one main road that everyone uses and it is always super busy.

I don`t really see that here. Most people understand the lane ending and the two lanes merging into one, so you let the car beside you, ahead of you (ie. zippering in). So why there are those few that refuse to get in line back where they are I don`t know, they are just selfish I guess.

I think the sign just indicates the lane is ending. Most people don`t wait until they come right to the end, to a complete stop before merging over.
Especially in this situation, I think people merge at the sign because of the lights. Merging at the sign makes it faster to get through. If people waited, it would take longer since people would have to take turns from each lane. Maybe they should be forced over earlier so there was already a line at the lights, avoiding the blockage at the intersection.
And clearly people can see the sign and the line of cars. They know who they were ahead of and behind, so why rush ahead and then try and cut in? They should be merging over when they realize what is going on.

^That's awful. Stealing is wrong. Stealing from a baby, a disabled person or a poor person... just seems worse to me and always will.
Stealing/taking it was already bad enough, returning it so you now have to take care of getting rid of it is the kicker. That was me with the shopping cart. Honestly, even though I didn't put it out for whoever to come along to get it (It'd be on the curb if that was the case) I didn't care that the TV was taken and when I saw it was gone, was kind of relieved I didn't have to keep arranging times with the parts guy. Even with it being returned, wasn't that big of a deal. It was already my problem to begin with - I was back at square one, so what? But leaving the shopping cart for me to now have to dump and making that my problem? That's what grinds my gears. Just like how your thief left you a worthless stroller to dump, well that's just the cherry on top of that deal, huh?!
I just can't understand the mind-set behind taking something, breaking it and then returning the stolen item for the rightful owner to dispose of. It's not like they're returning it because they had a change of heart or grew a conscience. They're dumping it because it's now a problem for them so they want to make it your problem. Ugh, seriously, I'd like to meet someone who does something like this and listen to the "thinking" behind it - why they think it's okay? Just in a morbid curiosity/know-I-should-keep-my-eyes-on-the-road-but-can't-help-but-look at this train-wreck sort of way.
I do see the humour in the shopping cart incident and am glad so many got their dose of schadenfreude giggles that day lol. Sorry to hear about your stroller incident. our city is cracking down on the last minute lane changers in areas where it gets really bad (and turning lane coming up signs are posted) they have put on posts so people can't jump the line and merge last moment because this move causes a backlog for the other things that lane is used for (going straight vrs turning off) there are also people who go up and down the overpass turn offs (take the exit then go straight through and go back on the highway) and it annoys the heck out of people and they don't want to allow them to zipper in when they feel the person is trying to jump the que plus ofcourse there's high traffic times where a 15 min drive turns into a 45 min idle sessionWhen life hands you Edward Cullen...throw him back and demand Eric Northman....

@julies1949
Do you happen to have any links?
Just out of curiousity. I've never seen any mention of "Zipper merging" in my province's correspondence, so I'd like to read what you are referring to.
I have read articles about the benefits and disadvantages of "Zipper merging". But not anything legal.
Seems to me it would only be beneficial if EVERYONE understood the concept and how to effectively maneuver it. As I said, I've never heard of it until now so it doesn't seem to me that it could ever be effective if only SOME people even know about it and choose to employ that method.
Having said all that, I did read that some places in the U.S. have put signs up to demonstrate "Zipper merging" so at least that way people know that it is expected.

Dh was watching a show and I type and read online - sometimes stopping to pay attention to what he was watching.. I noticed when he left the room that someone was named "bear" and another named "bam bam" so when he came back I asked him if he knew these were the names of the people he was watching on tv.. (like arent there other more productive things to do/see/hear be consumed by) .... Turns out the show is called Alaskan Bush People... I had to laugh at the stupidity of it all but also that it "made sense" all of a sudden.. That's how I feel about our return-to-the-scene-of-the-crime with stolen item thieves.. We shouldn't expect anything remotely moral from thieves-
Some kind of ghetto I tell ya..
