Today I called to see how my VBFF was doing after her surgery to remove her gallbladder.
She replied by telling me that they diagnosed her with a rare cancer- gallbladder cancer. Very hard to detect until it is quite advanced. She lives alone and the closest of her children lives in BC.
I've been crying on and off all day.
She is the "Healthy" friend who never even takes an aspirin! She has hiked every week since she retired in all kinds of weather!
She volunteers at a hospice, gives away most of her money to worthy causes! How can this be happening?
I don't know what to do. I offered to go visit but she wants to "Get her head around it!" She asked if I might come next week some time.
She wouldn't ask, but can you send good wishes wherever you send them, in her honour?
Thank-you, my friends! This thread is currently associated with: N/A

I'm so sorry to read that Unfortunately, cancer doesn't discriminate between good and bad people I have a question though: since they removed her gallbladder, aren't most of the cancerous cells gone, In which case, she would do chemo at this point? Or when you say it's advanced, do you mean it spread beyond her gallbladder/ into lymp nodes and such?
I would wait until next week when she's ready and take her something then. Since you seem to leave within driving distance, maybe send her a "thinking of you" type card until then?
All the best to her and to you!

I kept her and you, your hubby, in my prayers last night, my Friend, and will continue to do so. I pray the cancer was localized to just the gallbladder and hasn't spread beyond. But even so, radiation and chemo can still be indicated as treatment. I also sent you those clinical trials in Ontario for gallbladder cancer. I hope her oncologist can investigate them for her...hugs, Sweetheart, you've been through so much lately.....

So very sorry to hear about your friend, hoping treatment will help her get through this well.
I'll include her in my prayers, along with you and your husband as always.

Thinking of your friend at this difficult time...but for her, just knowing that she has such an awesome and caring friend as you will help her get through this.

Thank-you very much for your help, everyone! You are so very kind! I plan to send her a "message a day" if I can. She had mentioned that she enjoyed the "Valentine" and "Get Well" cards I had sent to her. One of our friends makes absolutely beautiful felted artpieces and she gave me 4 pictures of her art made into cards. I sent one of her with, hopefully, a cheery message. Thanks again!

My prayers are with your friend and you. Yes, sometimes just a Thinking of You card can brighten someone`s day. Never lose faith.

Oh avon, I understand how unfair it feels when a seemingly proactively healthy individual gets a diagnosis like this. I hope all the prayers and well wishes have made an impact in her well being so far, and when you do visit her that will lift her spirits too. She sure does have some things to sort out now. Update when you can, hopefully the Dr's can treat this rare cancer successfully.
