Thread: Multi-buys.

The use of multi-buys pricing is so annoying. I can understand large sizes being cheaper than small sizes by unit, but forcing the customer to buy multiple items to get a reasonable price is going too far. Poor people cannot afford multiples so they suffer. I have seen multiple purchases of as many as six cans of beans required to get a reasonable price with the penalty price for just one product as much as about 40%. This is common in Superstore but now I see it in Walmart food also. These companies seem to be going out of their way to annoy customers.

I have to agree with you here. My solution is to just walk away and go without. Or check another store for a better price. If it's a staple, it will probably be on sale somewhere else.

Sadly, when you live in a rural area like I do here in Nova Scotia, choices are very limited, but the principle is a good one.

this doesn't help with food waste if a consumer is buying more for a lower price but cannot really use it.

Normally I do also hate the idea of multi-buy. But I find it funny with some multi-buys (Like at No Frills during the Dollar Sale) when it is something like 2 FOR $1.00 OR $0.50 EACH, so it really is just $0.50 each at that point, no benefit to multi-buying. I will admit, I probably use it more than I should considering it's just me, and sometimes end up wasting food which I hate...

I don't know why it's assumed that everybody is part of an, "Average Canadian Family." There are many of us who do not fall within those perameters; for example, many people live alone. We are the invisible ones who spend on groceries and other luxuries too. We just don't want to buy six cans of beans at a time.
