I'm curious, would it have been easier to shut the forum down in order to update rather than to work around it?

Yes probably... but the problem's that I'm also preparing for my PhD defense which is in about a week's time so I can't do things like shut down the forum now, just don't have enough time to dedicate to be honest. After the defense will be able to do more fixes etc and get things back to normal.

However those are not as complicated as this one...I'm sure a super-genius like you will soon have it tamed...

The problem's the upgrading from vb3 to vb4, not vb4 itself as a product (although it is buggy as hell). If I created a vb4 forum from scratch now it would run super smoothly. Also yes other big forums have done the upgrade without problems, but say R F D for example, they are owned by the yellow pages and have millions of dollars to play with. They can have a guy work full time on just fixing forum issues if they need to lol

But you really had no choice, unless you wanted to build your own forum system from the ground up like I have seen a couple forums do.

Question though.... Is it normal for my page to "jump" to the left before it finishes loading? It is a pain in the butt becuase I try to click on a link and then it jumps over and I need to click it again..

I don't know if its normal in the sense it is meant to happen but yes, its happening to a lot of people. Once they finish working on the site and it doesn't lag as much, you likely won't have as much time to see something to click before it jumps though
