Good bye memories!

Just before the long weekend I was on my laptop. Charger light started flashing so I plugged it in, smelled melting plastic, saw sparks in the charger cord....unplugged and called the CS department of the company.
So I ended up having to send my laptop in to be checked for damage from the short in the charger and the charger back for investigation.
I got my laptop back today, damage free and a new cord and I sit down to go on it since I have been using my phone for the net for a week and I think I am going blind, flip it open and I am missing files....photo files....pics of my kids, my sons first birthday, my dad who is dead, vacations, pics my kids took.

I am a bit upset. They said they did not touch my files, but I gave the company permission to erase everything after they did a backup in case they needed to erase anything.

It is my own fault, I should have done regular backups.

OMG, I'm sooooo sorry. I learned to back up everything on disk the hard way too. I lost some very precious pictures om my dad that passed away as well. Thankfully for me, some of my dd's had the same pic's (i sent the pic's to them), so I was able to get them back.

If you EVER have to take your computer in for repairs, even something very minor, ALWAYS, ALWAYS, back everything up that you don't want lost. 9 times out of 10 they will erase everything and set it back to the original factory settings.

Does anyone else in your family have the pic's you lost. Same goes for your files and such, friends, co-workers????? Again I'm so sorry.

Rant is now smiles I hooked up my old computer and it worked....and still had the images on it from 5 years ago. I popped a bunch into emails to get them saved and am burning a disc as I type this....hopefully all works!

Get a portable (usb) hard drive or an external hard drive if you don't need portable. Save all your extra media and backups to that. I accidentally deleted three years of pictures once and now I back up copies to several computers and also burn a copy of the important pictures onto a cd. Call me Mrs Backup now, lol. I'm glad it ended well for you.

Super sad same thing happened to my husband on his iPhone, we had pics on there from our wedding that he took, and from our honeymoon, they were rare pics because we weren't carrying our camera around on our wedding day, so the shots were of him and friends who came a long way to see him, and other things like ziplining where we wouldn't carry our regular camera. When his phone stopped working, their warranty covered a replacement, but basically he just had to hand in his old one, and get a new one. All the pics were gone. I feel your pain!!

what operating system are you using? it may not be all lost completely... data can in some cases be recovered(not possible if HD is replace). It be helpful knowing what they do exactly....
