Thread: Dollarama rant

Sun, Feb 17th, 2013, 03:50 PM #1
This afternoon I went to the Dollarama in Bayers Lake Halifax. I had to pick up some cleaning supplies so I was mainly in that aisle. Two young (maybe 17) Dollarama staff walk by and one drops something under the sponges that were hanging on the wall, she kicks the sponges to see if she could find it then says "meh, Ill find it later" and walks away. She didnt even take the two seconds to bend down and look properly. Curious and since I had to get dish sponges I had a peek. It was an exacto (sp?) knife! Opened with the blade out!! I was shocked, she was down the other end of the aisle goofing off with the other staff member! I waited a good minute or two to see if she would come back and she didnt she actually went to another aisle, there were plenty of children in the store one of them could have easily picked it up and done some serious harm to themselves. So I picked it up, put it in my basket and when I was at the cash I gave it to the cashier (another young person) and said that they should really be more careful, she said oh thanks and cashed me out. I cant believe that the original girl would drop a knife on the floor and leave it!

i think you should contact head office about that. they should be fired if they would leave something like a dangerous sharp knife on the ground anywhere let alone where kids could pick it up.

I would def. contact head office about that - should not have happened! If she cannot handle such tools in the workplace, she shouldn't have such a job.

I would have asked for a manager and had a little chat with the manager and the employee at the time while you were there. That is very dangerous. Thanks for picking it up and doing the right thing.

I'm not sure why you would make such a generalization of young people like that, unless of coarse you are looking to create an issue, which is exactly what I think you are doing, because nobody can actually be that $#@*&^ stupid, can they ???? Your statement is not only ridiculous, but it shows exactly how ignorant some people are
I feel sorry for you, having to live in this world with that type of an attitude.

^^^ Sorry people, I had to say it. OP, if I were you, I would call and see when the owner of that store is going to be in and go back and speak to them. There could be a huge lawsuit if a child, even another older person picked up that blade. It never ceases to amaze me at the laxidazical attitude of some people in today's workforce. I'm happy that you picked up the knife and save someone from potential harm.

I agree with Holly I hate when people bunch young peoople and label them very sad. I know I have raised very responsible teenagers. To get back to OP I would call the Store Manager and give them a heads up so they know about it. Then maybe she will get retrained on saftey on the floor for themselves and customers.

What an ageist comment. Those young whipper snappers are ruining our society, right? Like previous generations never made mistakes when they were young. Sounds trollish
OP you are definitely right that someone could get hurt. I don't think this is a firing offence though. A 17-year-old girl's mind (at least some that I have interacted with) would not think that far ahead. Teenage girls that don't have children or don't have younger siblings, etc don't always know that kids can get in tight spaces and do crazy things. I think this is more of a case where the manager should explain that there are a lot of kids in the store and they could get hurt. Explaining things to people is often enough to make sure it doesn't happen againLast edited by torontogal12; Mon, Feb 18th, 2013 at 12:55 PM. Reason: added last line

i can't say if this is typical behaviour of young or old ppl... but it seems to definitely be a sign of the times.
low work ethics and laziness seem to be so common these days. i always see employees goofing off, chatting about everything under the sun except what they are being paid to do. leaving things in the middle of the aisles, obviously left for a long period of time for no good reason.
in my local rcss where i do 99% of my household shopping, it is mostly the younger employees doing this... but then i don't see many young ppl holding the higher positions of greater responsibility in that store.
it is perfectly acceptable to expect that a young adult would be responsible enough to make proper workplace decisions, according to their position in the store. their superiors hire them to perform certain tasks based on their experience and perceived ability to perform. young ppl are most definitly capable of being very responsible even if they haven't been overburdened by life in general.
saying that a young adult shouldn't be expected to be responsible is like giving them a way out of being held responsible for their own actions.
it's like asking what came first, the chicken or the egg

Your post is totally indicative of the older generation. They have no understanding of respect and empathy whatsoever, they are never willing to give the younger generation the benefit of the doubt, it is just about making broad generalizations, stereotyping according to age, and widening the generational gap. It's just a sign of ignorance.
Doesn't sound so great, does it?
Let's not blame youth for everything. So many young people have accomplished so much, and are well on their way to becoming the responsible, cultured, intelligent leaders of tomorrow. I'm pretty sure you'll find significant evidence pointing out that the "fun" had by the baby boomer generation has contributed to the tough luck that Generation Y is facing today (job market, rough economy, etc.) - so it's funny that you seem to think it's the younger people who are entitled.
Signed,
A young person
*OP, sorry about the above rant. Just wanted to say good on you for taking the initiative to do something about the knife on the floor. I agree that a call/email to head office would be warranted - it's not even about holding the girl responsible, it's about making sure the manager of the store is aware of the situation and provides the necessary training to employees to ensure such an incident isn't repeated.Last edited by Aimz; Mon, Feb 18th, 2013 at 06:35 PM.
