Ok ladies, I found out from my Mother this week that Metis Indians have been granted status rights, and my Mom's family is Metis. I don't have a status card but am going to apply for one for me and for Trent, does anyone know what this means for me or what "rights" off reserve Indians are getting? I searched online and it's all written in mumbo jumbo talk and it's all a bit overwhelming to read.

slambert....this happened a month ago I think..I work for an aboriginal agency so I know a bit about it. if you are on income assistance, it means that the band will assist you with some things but you will have to prove to some agencies that you are in need of funds and can't pay for things on your own. now that you have status, Metis do have a right to hunt and fish and have access to some scholarship programs but from what I've been hearing and reading, not much will change. it is more a "national pride" issue that Metis are now able to fall under Indian Status. but as for "what you can get out of it" - there's not a whole lot unless you are also on income assistance.
this article will help a bit I think: http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2013/01...n_2426789.html
"They argued they are entitled to some or all of the same rights and benefits as on-reserve First Nations members. They say that includes access to the same health, education and other benefits Ottawa gives status Indians; being able to hunt, trap, fish and gather on public land; and the ability to negotiate and enter treaties with the federal government."
the biggest benefit will likely be that since you are now able to declare yourself indian, you get preferential treatment for some things. like if you want to apply to get into a certain program, say...education...you can check off a box that says you are indian/metis and get 5% on your admission. so if you are side by side an applicant who is not indian/metis and you are exactly the same in grades and credentials, you or your children will be admitted over that person.
additionally, and more politically, the Metis can now dispute land claims and treaties in the same way that other Indians were able to before.
hope that helps. there has been a lot of talk about it around me since I work for an Aboriginal agency here in Vancouver. of course everyone in my agency is happy about it but there is a lot of backlash from it from other people.

Thank you dlee, that is very helpful. I am not on income assistance and I think that's what I gathered from the stuff I was reading. It would be nice if they just wrote stuff in plain English..LOL I am going to apply for my card and if it can help Trent with schooling then YAY he wants to be a Marine Veterinarian so I'm guessing that won't be cheap, it would also be really nice to have some help with the $40 000 in medical bills we are dealing with after 4 years of chemo (and that's with "FREE" healthcare! ) for the boy and since our government wouldn't help me as a "white" woman I would have absolutely no problem having them help me as a Metis woman. I don't hunt or fish..LOL but I am happy that Metis are now being recognized
Thanks again, I appreciate your help!!
