My mom, sister and DH's step mom and aunt tried to convince me to open a basket business. I like them and they look okay but I don't think I'm a professional. lol. I do enjoy it though!

I love shopping sales and building a small stockpile so that I'm almost always able to make up a basket for any occasion.

Makes impromptu occasions easier. Nothing worse than getting zero notice for events!

Read such an interesting article in Today's Parent today. 51% of poll participants do not send Thank You cards.

What do you ladies do? Do you make your kids write thank you cards for presents?

I currently do them for birthdays, presents, etc. but now that DD is able to write, she'll be doing her own.

Birthdays are the only gifts for which I do not send thank you cards. My mom never did it for us as children, so perhaps that is why? I do believe in the importance of showing gratitude though. Since my kids are little, I give a sincere and specific thank you to each guest when they leave the party. Once my children are old enough they can do this themselves. If a gift is dropped off or mailed a phone call is made instead. I hand-make thank you cards and send for all other celebratory occasions in which gifts are involved or when people are just generous.

I have one friend who does birthday thank-you cards and they are nice, but I don't feel necessary. I have a family member who sent me such an insincere thank-you for a shower gift that I would have preferred to have not been thanked at all.

Interesting post. Thanks for the food for thought. I guess at 51% it is whatever you feel good about, eh?

I send thank you cards for all 'big' events in our life, anniversaries, graduation etc. its important to me to make those who are near and dear to us, feel special that they not only took part in our day but that their presence was duly appreciated. we don't have a huge circle of friends/neighbors so those we do have we truly appreciate them and they know it.

    Thanks for the input ladies!

I can totally see both sides. I find the info interesting.

For me, I like sending a specifc thank you for the people who only time out to come to our event and/or also gave a gift. I know I'm in the minority. Seems like I usually am. lol.

I have one person that NEVER says thank you. She drives me nuts. No bridal shower thank you, no wedding thank you, no baby shower thank you, no birthday thank you. The last event we were barely acknowledged. The kids and I went without DH because he was away and we all felt awkward (and this is DH's family). The hosts barely spoke to us (one was outside bbq'ing and the other was chatting with her family). When she opened our gifts, she yelled "cool, thanks" from across the room and that was it.

I totally dont mind not getting a thank you but geesh, some manners would be nice. lol.

I like thank you cards. I hand write them, thank the person genuinely and mail within a few days of the event.

wow totally relate Lola. I have a few of them myself. I just let it fly. nothing else can be done. at least you got a 'cool'. mine never even mentioned it.. i almost want to ask if she enjoyed using it, just in case someone else took it from the table during the party.

anyway. enjoying today so nice out. have to go to parents and clean up backyard garden area, finish laundry, work on renewing the 'family contract to do list' some things have changed since we started it. so there will be lots of things we need to get rid of now.. just no time to get 'er done.

and im nearly 100% sure i have another cold coming on. fighting it with everything i have in the medicine cabinet as we speak.

The entire article is pretty interesting if you have school age kids and wonder about party etiquette. It's in the current Today's Parent magazine near the back.

I didn't know some schools have an "All or Nothing" type policy. Either you invite all kids in your class or you cannot invite any at school/on the property.

    Thoughts?

I'm going to have to ask our school next year. It'll be DD's first friend/classmate party.

We don't have an "invite" policy at our school. As a teacher, I like the all or nothing. I have seen a lot of hurt feelings over not getting invited then, I have to deal with it. Then again, that is usually because kids are not discrete. I think if it can be done discreetly then there need not be an issue. We also have 7 kindergarten classes next year at our school so...kinda hard for feelings to be hurt. Limiting the number of kids invited would help too. If only 5 kids are invited it is not as big a deal and the parent could hand deliver. Not there yet personally, but good to think about.

    Good points!

This year DD's class is 14. I'd have no problem inviting that amount but the other Kindergarten class has 25! Could you imagine? That would be insane!
