The mother of Grammy-winning pop star Bruno Mars has died. Bernadette Hernandez died Saturday, June 1, 2013 of a brain aneurysm, according to a publicist for Mars' label.




Bruno Mars' family is mourning the loss of the pop star's mother, Bernadette Hernandez.
Hernandez, 55, passed away Saturday after suffering a brain aneurysm — according to a publicist for Mars' label, Atlantic Records, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the person was not authorized to speak on the record.

Mars has four sisters - (photographed l-r) Presley, Tahiti, mother Bernadette who passed away Saturday, Tiara, Jamie.


Mars, 27, whose real name is Peter Hernandez, is one of six children — including his four sisters who are currently in a girl group, and a brother who serves as the drummer for the Grammy winner's band.

Esther Williams, Hollywood Mermaid, dies aged 91

US swimming champion-turned-movie star Esther Williams has died in Los Angeles aged 91.
Her spokesman said she died peacefully in her sleep. She had been in declining health due to old age.
A national swimming champion by the time she was 16, her success led to a career in Hollywood "aqua-musicals" designed just for her, in the 1940s.
She became known as Hollywood's Mermaid, starring in films including Dangerous When Wet and Easy to Wed.
Williams became one of cinema's biggest box-office stars in the 1940s and 1950s, famously appearing in spectacular swimsuits that capitalised on her physical beauty.
Her films were typically lavish song-and-dance affairs, following the same formula of romance, music and comedy - held together by a lightweight plot that provided infinite excuses for the actress to get into the water.

Author Iain( M) Banks dies aged 59 of cancer

He was best known for his novels The Wasp Factory, The Crow Road and Complicity.
In a statement, his publisher said he was "an irreplaceable part of the literary world".

Publisher Little, Brown Book Group said the author was "one of the country's best-loved novelists" for both his mainstream and science fiction books.
"Iain Banks' ability to combine the most fertile of imaginations with his own highly distinctive brand of gothic humour made him unique," it said.
After announcing his illness in April, Banks asked his publishers to bring forward the release date of his latest novel, The Quarry, so he could see it on the shelves.
On Sunday, it was revealed the book - to be released on 20 June - would detail the physical and emotional strain of cancer.

Cirque du Soleil performer dies following accident during performance

A performer in the famous Cirque du Soleil has died after falling off a stage during a show in Las Vegas.
Paris-born Sarah Guyard-Guillot was performing in the Ka show at the MGM Grand.
The 31-year-old acrobat and mother of two was pronounced dead late on Saturday night in hospital after falling 50ft (15m) from the stage.
Her death is believed to be the first fatality during a live performance in the show's 30-year history.
Witness Dan Mosqueda told the Las Vegas Sun that Ms Guyard-Guillot was being hoisted up the side of the stage when it appeared that she slipped free of her safety wire and plummeted to an open pit below.
"Initially, a lot of people in the audience thought it was part of the [show]," he said. "But you could hear screaming, then groaning, and we could hear a female artist crying from the stage."

Enter the Dragon star Jim Kelly dies

US actor and karate expert Jim Kelly, who starred with Bruce Lee in Enter the Dragon, has died at the age of 67.
Kelly became famed for his cool one-liners and fight scenes as the charismatic Williams in the 1973 martial arts classic.
His other films included Black Belt Jones, Three the Hard Way, Golden Needles and the Black Samurai.
Marilyn Dishman, Kelly's ex-wife, said he died on Saturday of cancer at his home in California.
Enter the Dragon is considered to be one of the most popular kung fu films of all time, it was Lee's first film in the English language and was released days after his death at the age of 32.
In the 1980s, Kelly re-trained as a professional tennis coach.
In an interview with the LA Times in 2010, Kelly said: "I broke down the colour barrier - I was the first black martial artist to become a movie star. It's amazing to see how many people still remember that, because I haven't really done much, in terms of movies, in a long time."

Charlotte Brosnan dies of ovarian cancer aged 41

Pierce Brosnan has paid tribute to his daughter Charlotte, who has died of ovarian cancer, aged 41. In a statement issued to People magazine, Brosnan said his "darling daughter Charlotte Emily passed on to eternal life" on June 28.


It is the same cancer that killed her mother, Cassandra Harris, who was Brosnan's first wife.
"Our hearts are heavy with the loss of our beautiful dear girl," he said.
"Charlotte fought her cancer with grace and humanity, courage and dignity."
Brosnan adopted Charlotte and her brother Christopher after their father died in 1986.
Cassandra Harris died in 1990 at age 43. Charlotte had been suffering from the disease for three years.
