Oh, 'the good ol' days', when the internet was a pipeline dream, and Pac Man was the hit in video game technology. How things have changed...
What is something you grew up with, that kids today are missing out on?
TV shows, activities, community events, you name it...

I grew up watching shows like Mr. Dressup, Fred Penner's Place, and Under the Umbrella Tree...I wish those were still on for kids today...

Oh, Dan, I took my son to see a Fred Penner concert at a children's festival, and I was as excited as he was - it was FAB!

The biggest thing I think kids are missing out on was what I loved best about my childhood in the '60s - the freedom.
On nice days, we would take off on our bikes for the whole day, just exploring our small city and beyond.

My favourite thing to do was bike downtown to the library, return books, then go across the street for the Saturday matinee - especially for Coke shows where admission was just a certain number of bottle caps; then after go to the library to pick out a huge stack of books, then we would go to a special place at the hospital grounds where there was a grotto, spread out to relax, and start reading our books.

Our neighbourhood was like an extended family, most were SAHMs, so you could stop at anyone's house if you needed a drink of water, the bathroom, etc.

Reading books. When I was a kid I used to just grab a book and read. I would buy a book with my pocket money or go to the library during my free time.

I'm trying to encourage my son to read books so every night (well, almost ), he would pick a book for me to read.

I don't think my kids are missing out on too much. If anything, they are missing out on it is personal freedom. I will not let them play out front alone or wander to their friends houses to play, but neither does any other parent in my area.

My kids go and do almost anything. I am restless in the house so I am always doing something.
We camp, bicycle, do sports, go to the park, travel, go to the drive in....constantly on the go.

Some of my favourite shows!!!! How I Loved Mr Dress Up and Under the Umbrella Tree! I once saw Mr Dress Up on the TTC (year and years ago) I wanted to go hug him..but I didn't haha

I agree on the personal freedom.
I remember years ago, my parents would let me walk back from school and I think I was around 8 yrs old. There were no school buses. Our home was not too far and it was totally safe. Now there's no way I will let my son do that. I worry when he's out of sight just for a minute.

For me its the TV shows...I used to look forward to Friday nights and ABC's TGIF! Shows that were funny, family oriented - everyone could sit down and enjoy.


Saturday Morning Cartoons - What happened to them??? I loved Saturday Mornings!!! Big bowl of cereal or grilled cheese sandwich with OJ in-front of the TV - then outside to play when the shows were done.

I agree with i forget.

When I was young, I grew up in a pretty small town. We could wander the streets til late at night and your parents wouldnt worry.

My daughters only 2 atm, but she definatly won`t be wandering around without supervision. Too many creeps.

Music you could listen to that doesn't make your heart go into tachychardiac spasms! Even our DD said she was born into the wrong generation; she loves 60s music...so innocent back then, when holding hands was..omg!...SO special!!

I'm going to get thumped for this, but when Moms were Moms and Dads were Dads, but only in the best sense of the word!
Coming home from school to freshly baked chocolate cake and having it with a cold glass of milk...coming home from school and just having a Mom there and dinner was in the oven, and she wasn't dressed in sweat pants (!), but in a pretty dress...
And I'm not getting into the man vs woman thing here....it just felt so right back then....so comforting...

Like others: the freedom! Playing outside until the street lights came on in the winter...riding bikes wherever we wanted to go...

Penny candy stores: the local confectionariess where 5 or 10 cents would buy you and your friends a whole brown paper bag worth of candy!

No 24-hr a day graphic, everything bad news, news stations! Yes, nice to be informed these days, but not to the extent that we need it these days...I'm much more relaxed when I check in, and then check out. (this does not apply to trials on tv...lol)

Variety shows like the Ed Sullivan show....no swearing, just good clean acts. Nowadays every second show is about confrontation! Everything is them against the other! Yelling, fighting, winning, losing....one day I'd like to count them all up in a week's worth of tv just to find out for myself how many shows pin people against each other, or involve scamming others...

Anyhoo, Dan...thank you for that stroll down memory lane........perhaps a Coke Float is in order.
(okay! how many of you thought of another kind of "coke"?! See? Did it myself, sigh.... Lol!)

I remember when I was kid being able to go down to the bayou to sit, throw rocks... just about anything, alone or with a friend and enjoy the bliss. Now those kids get twits, facepokes, texts and push notification.

I can't imagine sitting by the bayou fooling around on my phone and worried it might get wet!

Mature women are SO much more desirable, lol...not whiny, no games...we know what we want and we can take it or leave it, and you'll never be left wondering what we're thinking!
