Maybe it's just because we've had the windows open lately because it has been a nice night-time temp. But apparently, crickets molt 3 times during the summer and it's only on their last "incarnation" that they have the ability to "chirp".

That's just not a very nice thing to say, Avon.

But seriously...we have not had a summer this year! Lousy spring, cold summer...where's this greenhouse effect I've been hearing about and when does it kick in?!
I hope September is summery....and Avon? Boo!

Wow, I never heard this before, you made me Google!
Apparently it's not necessarily true that winter is coming sooner, because the warm weather can speed up their life cycle.
Hm... I didn't know that it's only the adult male which sings, rubbing his ridged wings together.
Now I know lots about crickets!

It's amazing how many times those "old Wives" are right on! Personally, I'm old and I'm a wife but I'm not an "old wife" as such. Some day, maybe.

Honey...with the way you keep yourself busy and never setting down for one complete second, old man 'Time" doesn't stand a CHANCE catching up to you. So no. You're never going to get old!!

But you know.......my Mom was OLD at my age!! Women behaved older, dressed older way back then....she would never have been caught wearing jeans at any age, nevermind at this age! Maybe clothing has changed us...we don't have to dress our age anymore...except for shoes. Oh, yes....sensible shoes make so much sense now!!

Crickets or the weather channel, we are going to get whatever mother nature is set on giving us. She has her own system.
I believe in those wives tales and pearls of wisdom. There is a reason why they call them that. I really cannot believe where the summer went though it is crazy!

You may be right. Our burning bush goes bright red in the fall, and some leaves are already turning. Our raspberry bush is late blooming and we usually "harvest" late August/early Sept. and the raspberries are nearly finished. Our snapdraggons usually bloom (reseed) late in August and their bloom is nearly finished now.

hmm. Totally didn't know that about crickets meaning 6 weeks til frost but I guess it makes sense now that I think about it.
I always associate crickets with my birthday (which comes toward the end of August)...and I suppose that first frost would be roughly 6 weeks after since I can also recall as a teenager that we would often prime tobacco like hell around the 24th or 25th of September to get it off before the frost came."Be yourself. Everyone else is already taken." Oscar Widle
