Asian Eyelid Surgery...

whats with calling eyelid surgery "asian eyelid surgery" I've heard this topic being debated over and over again and now it's come back in the news because Julie Chen revealed she had plastic surgery to modify her eyes because both an agent and her boss (at that time) told her she couldn't get any further in her career because her eyes were holding her back. But instead of wording it like "she got surgery to make her eyes appear larger" everyone is saying "she got surgery to make her eyes appear less asian" or even saying "...to look more caucasian"...her eyes are still very much asian to me.

Asian eyes come large and small, monolid and double lids just like some caucasians have hooded and monolid eyes as well as large double lids. Her eyes still look asian and so does most other people who I have seen that have gotten the surgery on TV. It's really ignorant to say things like (and I've been hearing this on talk shows) "Asians are killing their culture by getting this surgery." Is this not a double standard to say these things about asians deciding to go under the knife? I mean no one generalizes itallian people, who have "big itallian noses", that decide to get a rhinoplasty that theyre killing their culture (I'm just taking other stereotypes for an example...not meaning to insult anyone here).

Asian culture is a lot like any other culture out there, there is a prefered look and not everyone has it but most people want it (ex in america it could be having blonde hair, blue eyes). Most famous stars in Hong Kong and China have double eyelids if that's what you look at everyday then yeah you'll desire it and see it as beautiful and thats why they get the surgery it's not to look more caucasian (in most cases). It's so ignorant for people to be saying that we're trying to look more white and we're killing our culture... I would think of it as trying to look like a more desirable version of asian if anything.

Looks to me like she got more than just her eyes done. Her boss told her that because of her strong asian features she was not relatable to the community & during interviews her eyes made it seem like she was disinterested & bored


I would say she appears more Caucasian now then she previously did, but in any case plastic surgery is a personal choice and its completely up to the individual. I personally don't think this has anything to do with her trying to erase her culture, it's just the way she prefers to look, which is fine by me

I agree... I watched that segment and wondered at first what she was talking about when she was saying she had her eyes done, as they didn't really look like they had been! Of course, I can see the difference seeing the before and after pictures, but I also thought (looking at her on TV) that she had probably had other procedures done since! I'm sure a lot of people on network television have as well, regardless of race.

I think the procedure has become more common in Asian countries, so it's not just the pressure of American media on American citizens of Asian descent causing the trend!

i Watch a tv show few years ago and they say that was pretty popular in asian country.....i bet it'S to please the men.....like the african women using bleachers ( cancerogenes products ) on their skin....so called beauty canons will never cease to amaze me

Regardless of culture, race etc everyone always wants what they don't have. I've always been super blonde. I'm as natural blonde as they come and never have died my hair, i'm also very pale and I have experience racism by many people for it all my life. Its not only Asians or african americans etc that experience racism. I have all my life and it was really hard because no one every recognized it because "how can a white person experience racism" so it made it even harder to understand what was happening to me. I even wrote an essay about this in university years ago. My point is because of this i ALWAYS wanted brown hair, and tanned skin. I guess we always want what we don't have. I think everyone is beautiful!!!

This makes me very sad. I had a Korean roommate who would glue her monolid eyelids together so it appeared they were double lids. It made me sad. She was gorgeous even with no makeup on

Thats a very airbrushed picture - her nose is not like that in other pictures at all or on her tv show. I'm sure she has had other work done though other then her eyes. But that picture they used for the after is terribly airbrushed.

My korean friend uses double sided tape on her eye lids. She used to use the glue as well. She's gorgeous without the tape. But I guess if this makes her happy then so be it. I love her regardless.

On The Talk after there was all the publicity about this, Julie said she did not have any other work done at all.

She said of anything she would never get her nose done because it's just like her grandmother's 'lucky' nose. Others suggested she had cheeks done, chin implant, etc. - she said no, just her eyes.

They showed a time-lapse video of how her makeup artist contours her nose to make it seem thinner, and she explained she also extends her lipline with lipstick.

She also showed a current pic of what she looks like without makeup when she comes in to work.

asians, blacks and east indians are bleaching their skin, narrowing noses, eyelids and dying hair to try to look "white".

Never knew she had her eyes done. I've watched the "No Makeup" segment and thought she looked normal... nothing 'unusual' stood out.
