Mothers with child designated parking

Do pregnant people trump those with infants in carriers or toddlers in strollers, or vice versa? Etc. And, I have been in a few discussion over the years, that I shouldn't.

Apparently, I also know men who can be pregnant? I just caught that I put pregnant people, versus women. Just tickled my sense of humour !

I would definitely be making a complaint, not only is she not supposed to be using that spot (unless maybe she is expecting) she is also not supposed to be using what is called customer parking. Employes are not supposed to use the closest parking spots to the store.
At RCSS one evening with DH and DD, we went to park in the designated spots for expecting and small children, only to be cut off by 2 little old ladies. I wanted to run up to them and say congrats, clearly one of you must be expecting, as there are no small children with you. But DH wouldn't let me.

i'd be very tempted to say "congrats when you due? must be soon!" i bet her face would just drop! (i mean really they are for pregnant women who are obviously pregnant(walking with a basketball attached to your stomach and swelling feet isn't easy)..and parents with young kids)

Not all the stores care. My mother had a temporary handicap sigh after a surgery and some a**hole in a truck cut us off to part in the last handicap spot and he did not have a sigh. All the store told us to do was call 911.

Just a question ,but why do parent with children need to have reserved parking? This is fairly recent, it was not around when I had children and I survived. This in not meant to be snotty just looking at the justification.

it's curtsey parking for those with young children and pregnant (i've even seen them for seniors) often people who are pregnant (well in the 3rd trimester when feet are swollen and walking turns more into a waddle lol) have a hard time walking the whole length of a parkinglot.. same with those with young children (the fear of running in a parkinglot, short legs, parent having to carry them) legally the police can't do anything about it like they can with handicapped parking

You should have called the police (not 911) though.. they send someone out to ticket.. the ticket is $300

They don't "need" reserved parking but its just courtesy. I feel they also help to keep little ones safe as they aren't walking through an entire, busy parking lot. I always hold my childs hand but sometimes cars get really close to them as they don't see them. In my city a 2 yr old was killed in a parking lot where someone backed over him. So, sometimes it makes me at ease to park closer to the doors so my son is safer. And of course it can be very difficult for pregnant women to walk across a parking lot.

My kids are 4 1/2 and almost 2, and I've never used the spots. With taking kids and a stroller out of the car, I like to be in a less-congested part of the lot so we have greater safety unloading. Carts are generally further back in the lot, so I can use a cart for them if I don't want the kids walking or using a stroller.

I think the spots are a PR thing for the businesses more than anything else -- companies want to be seen as family friendly. I think it's the rare case that parents NEED those spots... if they can manage going out shopping with the kids, they can probably handle parking a little distance from the door. Kids are usually more bundled up than the parents are, so temperature shouldn't be a big concern. If a pregnant woman is unable to walk for any distance for medical reasons, maybe a handicap pass would be better.

I like that the spots are wider than normal parking stalls. Makes it so much easier to get the kids in and out of the car seats when you can actually squeeze yourself in as well to buckle them up. Nothing worse than trying to get the infant bucket seat in when the car next to you is so close.

I have rheumatoid arthritis but I think people who are in way more pain than I should be taking up the handicapped spots, so I have never asked a doc for one. I am being investigated for MS, and have dizzy spells and severe hip, joint, and foot pain and sometimes parking far away means that I will just skip getting the things I need that day.

I know that while I might get an angry mom yell at me for parking in the spot because she doesn't see me with a child, I need to park close and can't afford a ticket in a handicapped spot.

I'm as guilty as anyone else at quickly judging someone I think is doing something wrong, but sometimes there's more than meets the eye.

I agree...I can't imagine what you must go through. Unfortunately, most of the time i see people parked in those spots appear to be in great health, are not pregnant and have no kids with them. If I were you i'm sure I would use the spots on occasion as well. I'm sorry your going through what you are and I really think you should request a handicap sign from your doctor. You shouldn't have to pass up getting what you need because you can't find a spot close enough.

This is for pregnant women as well, not just small babies....just pointing that out. So maybe you just can't tell.

I work across from Square one and just yesterday I saw a guy parking there, no kids, no car seats. I gave home the stink eye, but am too chicken to say anything.

Same here, I have seen it happen but I hate confrontations and I am too chicken to complain.

I know the original post is about the pregnant/children spots, but I just saw this posted about a Michigan man legitimately parked in a handicapped spot who came back to his van with a nasty note left for him - make sure you read his wife's posting too.
