Meteorologists are continuing to monitor a developing storm that will bring an extended period of winter weather to Newfoundland between Thursday and Saturday. Persons planning weather-sensitive activities are advised to check for updated forecasts and should begin to consider alternate arrangements. Travel is expected to become difficult for many areas on Thursday.

Precipitation: Snow is forecast to spread across most of the Island on Thursday, with snowfall warnings having been issued for areas near the Baie Verte Peninsula and Fortune Bay. Over southeastern Newfoundland, the snow will likely mix with or change to rain or freezing rain late Thursday before transitioning to heavier snow on Friday. Precipitation is forecast to remain as snow over the remainder of the Island, with significant snowfall totals possible over interior and northeastern sections, and snowfall warnings may be expanded.

Wind: Strong north to northeasterly winds will accompany this storm. Winds will begin to strengthen late Thursday for most of the island, with gusts over 100 km/h possible over the eastern half of the Island during the day on Friday and into Friday night. Winds are forecast to ease on Saturday.

Visibility: The combination of snow and strong winds will create considerable blowing snow for most areas beginning Thursday evening. Blizzard conditions with near zero visibility in blowing snow are possible for parts of the northeast coast on Friday and the Avalon Peninsula Friday afternoon and evening.

Ice pressure: Persistent onshore wind along the east and northeast coasts may result in extensive ice buildup or significant pressure, both along the coastline and in the bays, especially north of Cape St. Francis.

Wave action: Eastern facing shoreline areas of the Avalon Peninsula south of Cape St. Francis can expect pounding surf and high waves on Friday.

There remains some uncertainty regarding the development of this system. There is potential for significant rainfall for the Avalon and significant snowfall for the entire northeast coast for Thursday evening and Friday. However, confidence is too low to offer forecasts of precipitation amounts at this time.

Light snow has developed and will continue into Friday. The snow may mix with or change to freezing rain over coastal areas exposed to the northeast between Cape Freels and Clarenville overnight tonight and Friday morning. Snowfall amounts of 20 to 30 cm can be expected by Friday evening, with significant additional amounts expected Friday night into Saturday morning.

The snow is expected to become heavy, at times, by Friday afternoon. Northerly wind gusts of up to 80 km/h are expected to develop overnight or Friday morning and will persist through Friday night. Over the Bonavista Peninsula, wind gusts as high as 100 km/h are forecast Friday afternoon.

The strong northerly winds will combine with the fresh snow to produce near zero visibilities in blowing snow starting Friday morning or afternoon, then continuing Friday night.

Conditions will improve Saturday morning as the snow tapers off and the winds begins to diminish.
