Excellent analysis, cheeks...there was a big article in Canadian Business Magazine, back when W-M entered Canada by buying a few old Woolworth stores. Some people weren't afraid to compete, and thought the W-M model wouldn't work in Canada, but they didn't really know the size, scope, and power of their new opponent. Now, Zeller's is gone, soon to be followed by others, perhaps.

Although Target got off to a bad start they are going to recover here just adding to the pressure. At our nearby Mall the new Target is just about to open right next door to a Thrifty's. People here are very loyal to Thrifty's but they're even more expensive than Safeway. The only thing Thrifty's will have going for it is wider selection, deli and meat department but the differences in price are going to hammer them every where else.

According to book The Wal-mart Effect, we have partly done this to ourselves--our constant demand for low(er) prices has given them the blessing to do whatever is necessary to cut costs.

So we don't care where our TV is made, as long as it's cheap! Anyhow, I've diverted onto a socio-economic rant--bottom line is W-M is on its way to becoming the retail colossus in Canada, end of story.

Yup... we saw it with that store... what was the name again... right KMart... yup... walmart killed them and they were a giant... sears stores have closed, not all but some have... zellers is gone... hbc is even being sold... but walmart keeps growing... and i admit it... i do a lot of shopping there too.

My feeling is it won't happen soon, but without SAfeway I don't think AirMiles as a loyalty program can keep pace with all the other loyalty programs out there.

I have about 6,000 total miles in my account but intend on cashing them in soon as the way Airmiles treats its members I wouldn't be surprised it they folded without warning.

All the safeways are gone in victoria? We are losing the Saskatoon store with the only gas-bar to coop. Mind you coop was the place i bought gas before the safeway gas bar opened. I can understand bob, Safeway makes up the bulk of our airmiles as well.

Agree with you OB, but have to get a few Keg cards, so might as well get something--although I changed my balance to cash from dream, so getting 2$ off a 25$ purchase isn't that exciting--I've got 3X the miles you have, and it might be tough to unload, unless the eauction continues this year.

In the meantime, have a foot or so of snow to shovel that has magically appeared overnight--another reason to be grumpy today!

The sale of the Price Chopper location remains subject to finalization of an asset purchase agreement with the purchaser and approval from the Competition Bureau.

My Safeway had Reactine 25 count boxes on sale for $10.99 with $5 off coupon next to them. I was happy to find these for that price.

Bought $20 gas + 5 basic car washes today (2 cars for 90 days).

The way I read the mail out it should get a B$20 + 2 cars washes G20 and the B5 Car Washes G50 = 70.
