DD grew a little marigold plant for me for mother's day last year in her class. It's finally blooming for the first time.. lol! It's actually two plants - one's blooming orange and the other one's blooming yellow. They're planted so closely together that at first I didn't notice there were two plants

I haven't felt up to doing much after my surgery, and now its COLD out! I did at least get the back gardens cleaned up. Had my sons bring in some of the plants with my geraniums and my herb box. I also am going to try to see if my hibiscus plants will make it through the winter. I also had my canna brought in too. I forgot about my begonias, but will try to see if the tubers are still ok. I still have some carrots and beets in.
Also had the ds plant 3 new peonys up front under the pine bed. More to provide some shade for the hostas that are there.

I had raked pine needles yesterday (how to make most of warm day!) and decided to tackle some of the branch pile by bagging some yesterday for collection today. Lower back pain, shoulders, knees...!
This morning, did a quick cut of rose branches so plants have energy left for spring growth. Too bad I had not fed them this month but I did give them some banana peel (potassium) in early Sept.
If the promised snow lands tomorrow in Southern Ontario, I'll have to trim down the remaining flower plants that are not cut down in the front bed (already took care of mint and lavender last week; removed carrots yesterday>cream of carrot soup is on menu today!).

We brought in some nice yellow begonias. If we want to pot them next year, how do we keep them over winter? dried out of the soil? keep in the pot and keep moist? Thanks!

Throw a tomato in a box with them, and watch the magic ripening happen! I have several that look the same, but are delicious!

Basic suggestion for a pot of some flowers that I had brought indoors and put in the basement for Mom one autumn-keep the planter away from heat and cover the top with a nice piece of corrugated cardboard or two. The darkness helps the plants to "sleep" or stay dormant. I don't recall watering the pot at all but did check to see if any soil critters were lurking now and then.

Sadly, even here in the Okanagan, the frost just killed off the last of our rose blossoms. Sigh.

Mine survived getting pretty cold outside a couple years ago. I brought the planter in after a frost or two! put it up in my spare room in a cooler corner, and towards spring it started to grow! But some extra care would probably be a good idea!
I have now sadly done the exact same with my begonias that are in two planters outside. Its a nice day today so I should go and bring them in and hope for the best next spring again.
I am already planning in my head what to grow for next year, can't wait and the snow hasn't even started here yet!

Cleaned up the backyard this past week. Chopped some of the catalpa tree off, width-wise, not height-wise, we're not that tall Freakin' thing probably tops 25 feet now, it's only nine years old! Filled four yard bags with randomness but our yard isn't that big, dunno where it all came from! Sad that it's over but now I have spring shoots to look forward to... after a very long, cold winter.. bah!

Not blooming yard subject...but Christmas project I saw..I hope if you decorate outside with natural inspirations you will all share yours pictures !!!(When I was Young in my 15 and up year old,I was a big fan of Martha Stewart tv show and website for Christmas and halloween decos and baking,always amazing ideas.

I remember each year I pick some fresh tree piece and put it in a jar with water for the scent,since I use now a fake tree.I remember my auntie who live in the wood put some tree piece as for decoration in hers flowers boxes,it is so beautiful.You would paid that in garden center a ridiculous amount of money when it's look so easy arrangment to make.Same for pinecone with glitch,you would paid that a little fortune when a wood is so inspiring the winter!!!
