Not really a rant, I thought it was funny

Was at the mall so walked into Shoppers to check out whether the clearance section had anything good. Didn't buy anything but on my way out I spotted a dude shoving his hand in a jar at the cash and the cashier laughing with him.

He was paying in pennies and was the only person in that line, but lots in the others.

I'm sure I would've been mad if I had to wait in that line haha.

Well, I guess with the penny slated to go extinct sometime next year, he probably wanted to make sure he got his monies' worth.

    Kinda funny though.

We have a massive penny collection. Like, massive. We've been collecting for 15 years and have filled one of those big fat old fashioned glass milk containers that probably holds, I dunno, 5 gallons of milk? We filled that a few years ago and started on another one. I'm sure we'd be assassinated if we ever decided to lug those down to a store and buy something.

I work at a coffee shop.. and see this more and more last few weeks. I think with the penny going out of circulation, people are digging for their jugs and jugs of pennies and making use of them now.

I keep a bag of penny rollers at my counter, and just politely ask them to sit down and roll them, then purchase item from me. Amazing how fast those pennies add up.

Why would people be getting rid of their pennies. The will not stop being accepted as payment. When they stop giving out pennies if you don't have the pennies you will get charged more if the total ends in 3,4, 8 or 9. I am saving pennies so I can pay them the pennies rather than pay more. I have actually been considering going and getting pennies from the banks so I can use them later until I run out. Other than that you will end up putting things onto a credit card and then get charged the exact amount. I persinally think it will add up over time with this rounding thing and I could see stores making it so that they benefit for the extra rounding.

From what I understood, my cash register would automatically round up or round down to the nearest nickle. so a coffee is 1.78.. it rings up as 1.80 . The next size up is 1.96 and it will be rounded down to 1.95.

And yes, we were told we would have to accept pennies. So if it rang up as 1.80, I could take a loonie.. 3 quarters and 5 pennies.

Will have to check up on it. Think they go out of circulation in feb?

If the registers are automatically rounding, then that must mean they need to ask payment method before you get the final total. From what I understand, if you're paying by any means other than cash you pay the penny rate (meaning if the total is $1.96 and you're using debit, it will still be $1.96). Rounding is only for cash payment, isn't it?

Anyone know what year they stopped making the penny out of full copper?

But if you still have to take pennies and the customer has the exact change with the pennies, why would the cash register round up then? If it's $1.78 and he has exactly $1.78, surely he would not be charged the $1.80.

1996. Any penny 1996 or before actually has 2 cents worth of copper in it.

The cashier technically doesn't have to take all that loose change. Would it kill a person to roll it up and take it to the bank to convert to bills? That's what I do. The bank even gives me the roller papers for free.

Thank you! Found out the best ones are the ones before 1981, when they were made of 98% copper. Interesting articles floating around about how people are saving pennies to melt down after they are no longer legal tender.

Right you are. This website has the melt value of Canadian coins and the metal prices are always at todays prices.

I understand culling your change purse but why a whole jar? Just take it to the darn bank. You kind of waste not only your own time but everyone else's as well when you have a jar full of pennies.

Fun Fact, its illegal in Canada to pay for anything more than $0.25 in pennies
also $5 for nickels and $10 for dimes.
