Oh young grasshopper
Just wait until after redemption day and we shall see if you had trouble using those points!
I remember the first time I redeemed. I think it was $100 or $150. I went in thinking what the heck am I going to buy?!?!?! But actually ended up having to put items back on the shelf because I went over. Always remember that SDM is over priced, this will help eat up any balances.
What DH and I plan to do is going aisle by aisle grabbing stuff we use already and may need more of and only very very few splurge items that we wouldn't normally buy.
I don't think we will have any problem using $1000 worth of pointsInsert Clever Signature Here

You don't need to spend X to "qualify" You need to have 95,000 points to be eligible to redeem. (or 50,000 for a $125 redemption)
If you don't spend the full value of the redemption (SDM will like you) but the only thing is you would be wasting the points cuz they take 95,000 points if you spend $250, $248 or only $202 (before taxes)
A point about FPCs when you are doing a redemption:
If you have FPCs for non-taxable items use them and it will reduce your tax. -as long as they enter 2002

wow i m jealous ..I missed last year but in 2010 i did 6 redemptions and was exhausted.......even this time i m so excited.....cant help but thinking abt redemption...but only have pts for 4 redemptions right now.I just have to find a way to build up more pts.
some times i think the reason behind the excitement is that collecting op pts has become a very interesting game/hobby for me.lol.

Around Christmas time, Shoppers has a lot of special items that are not around the rest of the year. Last year I did two redemptions and I got a new set of Panasonic phones and a DVD player. Nothing like getting some things you need for free!

super excited this year. in the past i cashed in points for about $50 but since becoming an SCer and learning sooooo much from u guys, if i follow plans i should have enough points for 2 x $250 on mega redemption day
my question is, how do u really plan this ? do you spend time in the store scoping things out beforehand ? if you buy electronics does SDM have a good return policy ? i would like to be able to take a big bite out my christmas expenses but do u recommend using the points for gifts (electronics, perfume etc.) or for food items ? i am interested to learn how to get the most bang for my buck-or points in this case.

I am excited too! I have enough for 2 x $250 and 1 x $125 + $100 in GCs from my cc I will redeem, so potentially $725 in free stuff!

Personally, I find it really hard to plan because I find a lot of the stores are limited in their inventory of electronics/games etc which are some of the bigger ticket items that I would normally redeem for. I usually scope a few of the stores that I usually go to, and see what types of things they are carrying (last year for example, one store had a Tassimo and the other one I frequent, didn't but had a PS3 game that I wanted to buy as a gift - so I did a redemption at each store in order to make the most of it). I've also learned to ask in the electronics section if they have 'x' in stock...downtown Toronto, the stores aren't always big enough to have a dedicated electronics section because of space, BUT...they had about 10 DS 3D's in the back and I was able to get one for myself, and one as a gift
Perfume is another big one for me...they had the little sample sets last year for men and women for $75 (included small sample sizes of I think 10ish high end perfumes, and a voucher for a full sized bottle that the gift recipient can take in to SDM and redeem for the big bottle of their choice). Did 2 of those as well as xmas gifts since perfumes are SO personal. They were a huge hit and I've been told they'd be 'welcome' gifts again this year! haha
Because these items are bigger ticket items, don't usually have significant sales/promos/discounts etc., that's what I spend my points on since I'll be buying them anyway as gifts. As others have mentioned, there aren't usually very good deals on normal stuff you'd buy weekly/monthly, and SDM brings in some different stuff for the holiday season (like the Tassimo machine for example - I've never seen one at the stores I go to aside from last Christmas).
It's all personal though - if you save the points to stock up on things like diapers/formula/food/personal care staples, then it's worth it to you to stock up on those. If you're going to be buying electronics/perfumes/cosmetics for gifts regardless, it's a great way to not be out of pocket on the cash for them in my opinion.
Either way, I'd just recommend trying to be flexible on what you get (and have back up 'choices' if you can't get something). I've had my heart set on getting something in the past on a bonus redemption, and then being super bummed when I couldn't find any stores in town with the item in stock. *insert sad sigh here*
