Mujahideen in Afghanistan

Bin Laden with Pakistani journalist Hamid Mir in 1997.
After leaving college in 1979 bin Laden joined Abdullah Azzam to fight the Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan[52] and lived for a time in Peshawar.[53] From 1979 through 1989 under U.S. Presidents Carter and Reagan, the United States Central Intelligence Agency provided overt and covert financial aid, arms and training to Osama's Islamic Jihad Mujahideen through Operation Cyclone, and The Reagan Doctrine. President Reagan often praised Osama's Mujahideen as Afghanistan's "Freedom Fighters."
By 1984, with Azzam, bin Laden established Maktab al-Khadamat, which funneled money, arms and Muslim fighters from around the Arabic world into the Afghan war. Through al-Khadamat, bin Laden's inherited family fortune[54] paid for air tickets and accommodation, dealt with paperwork with Pakistani authorities and provided other such services for the jihad fighters. Osama established a camp in Afghanistan, and with other volunteers fought the Soviets.
It was during his time in Peshawar that he began wearing camoue-print jackets and carrying a captured Soviet assault rifle, which urban legends claimed he had obtained by killing a Russian soldier with his bare hands.

al-Zawahiri will probably take over, unfortunately Jihad will not stop.
Osama was 54, survived by four wives and 19 children.

SO... this means what? How does it change things? Do we stop killing innocent people? Is the war done? One bad guy may be gone, but who is the next person we go after?
*sigh*
Bitter sweet?

This may be good news for those who have been hurt at 9-11, I just feel sad for our troops still across the world fighting for safety & freedom of people that live over there.
not to mention our FREEDOM & SAFETY. I don't know about anyone else but this is still scary, hopefully they will lay their guns down and wave the PEACE .
"Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace" John Lennon

Probably not, they are calling it an assassination and most countries moved their terrorism threat to high alert

Nothing has changed overnight.
One man, a figurehead who was still respected and who still likely directed orders to his followers id dead, but like cockroaches: just because you kill one, doesn't mean thousands aren't hiding in the woodwork.
This might get worse before, and if, it ever gets any better.
CNN interviewed the head of a Muslim organization in the US who made an interesting point: that the young men who were routinely recruited to join those rebel forces such as AlQueda, are more reluctant to do so, now that changes are coming to their countries. He quoted one young man as saying that before, they joined because there was nothing else for them....but now, they have hope again (for their countries).
I thought it quite thought-provoking.....

So, they assasinate him eh? Weren't they supposed to capture him and bring him to justice? I guess that plan changed. This will probably light a fire under them now.

Yup, well said... bittersweet. I like the phrase Harper used in his reaction:
"Canada receives the news of the death of Osama bin Laden with sober satisfaction. We will continue to stand firm with our allies against the threat of global terrorism."
Interestingly, Harper received the news about bin Laden when campaigning in Abbotsford, BC.
A reporter there was interviewed this morning on radio, and said Harper just went to the side, wrote out his remarks, then spoke. Speechwriters were probably at home sleeping!

My cousin is having a big fit on FB about how killing is hurting the children and how he was born innocent and it's not his fault he's a little insane.
Really guys, really.
Just be happy he's gone, and worry about what will happen, not what did happen. Your fits on facebook wont change the past.Previously CanadianBella... I'm baaack!
