It's not that hard to own up to one's mistake. She should be frank and told you that she already ate some and cannot give you the cheese cake; and return your money pronto.

As for leaving out treats to visitors, there are two types: Some who take 1 or 2 and others who ate like they are in an eating contest. I would not leave anything out. Instead I'll ask "would you like a piece of chocolate / cake / or whatever?" If the answer is yes I would just offer her 1 from a package then put the rest away.

She had shopped for me, I had given her cash for cheesecakes but I got 1 of 2. She said she couldn't find the other one in the freezer and I said don't give me the money back just bring it when you find it...and she did, with 1/4 of the slices missing and no apologies. Seriously? That's not what I had in mind re: a great deal on cheescakes, more than 25% off...lolz

Rude or just really, really hungry? Maybe it just irks me because I have many times less cash to fling around so it seems like a bigger deal than it is?

Lock the doors, the neighbours are hungry!!!!
Maybe wait til she brings the items to give her the cash & adjust accordingly? And hide the food. Or put out a tray of dog biscuits (I've got some good recipes for carrot cookies ). Even my pets know better than to help themselves.

I helped organize the condo party for the neighbours last weekend. Wine & cheese, a few other treats like shrimp and smoked salmon. 2 people came with Tupperware. One followed me whenever I went near the kitchen to find out whether I was bringing more food out so he could have first dibs.

I've taken Quincy cat on the bus a few times. He usually sleeps in my purse when I board. Once I'm seated, he pops his head out & looks around. As soon as he hears the cries of "OMG! A cat! In a purse!" he feels he's done his job and can go back to sleep.

I've yet to have a cranky bus driver stay cranky and not crack a smile.

    Leftover cheesecake has no price!
I would not pay, I'll say it twice,
I would not pay, not half as much!
If the cheesecake my neighbour's lips had touched.
I would not consume, for goodness sake,
    The rest of half-eaten cheesecake.
But if perchance - imagine that! -
It were consumed by dog or cat
    Perhaps concessions I would make
    And offer them remaining cake.

Winter started very early this year, start snowing in October so I consider it a break (a treat from God). I do enjoy a white X-mas with snow falls but not at -30 c.

Didn't feel like global warming when we had -30 with windchills of -40 and lower in November!

Now we are being treated to minus single digits, but honestly, that won't last for long.
My rant would have been we have been without sun for a week - but it's popped out now!
