"Fall" into September Savings

^ oy, don't blame you, lizzie! Heard it's really crazy in Calgary - and elsewhere, too, I'm sure.
None here, just cold.

Finished two big dutch ovens of borscht - it's not perfect, but tastes good. I have one big problem when I make soups of any kind - too much stuff in proportion to broth. So I will let them sit for the afternoon, and see if I need to fix anything before supper.

So it's lovely to be frugal and make these homemade things - but OMG this took SO much work!

It's worth the work as many of us can vouch for Natalka including you, the tastes is nowhere comparable PLUS where can you can get Borsht soup in a can .

My dh & I like chunky soups so more stuff and less broth

Now all you need is some bread and butter and you're all set yummy and frugal meal and homemade to brag about!!!

Afternoon All,

Busy morning and afternoon.

Put a rub on the pork loin chops, bbq'ed 6 of them and we will have leftover pogos (made yesterday from scratch used corn flour instead of cormeal) if someone doesn't want the loin chops.

Made a wonderful lunch for dh & I - canned deer meat with homemade gravy, mashed potatoes and cucumbers on the side....delish. The boys do not like canned deer meat, don't know why but hey - hubby and I love it.

So I have a new challenge for myself AND if anyone else wants to jump on board - you are welcome to do so - HOWEVER ABSOLUTELY NO pressure, repeat no pressure whatsoever.....wait for it, it's your worse nightmare or atleast mine.....And I am giving myself until the end of September (30th) so that is 20 days to do this crappy chore.

See if you can guess what it is????


I know you're all rolling your eyes and sighing at the dreaded tasks....common - admit it....so anyone on board.....take a few days to decided (lol)

Not going to be frugal here. Got up this morning and the house was at 18, even though the thermostat was set higher than that. Dh later went under the house, into the crawl space, to check it out. Took a while to determine that dh can't fix it himself because this part is electric, Johnson & Johnson can't come today so we are hoping they will make it tomorrow. Another place in town is now only selling parts, not servicing things anymore. Postponed LO's birthday party until tomorrow and hope it will be fixed by supper time. We currently have no working furnace and it's certainly not warm outside. I baked LO's cupcakes and will continue using the oven to keep using it for heat and food...even though that wasn't my original plan for today. I put laundry on and the dryer will also put a little heat in the house. We have a small area heater that dh is bringing in from the shed. I bought it new when I was in university because my basement suite was often cold and the owner upstairs controlled the heat...luckily power was included in my rent. Not much else we can do at this point.

Thriftygranny-has your active son been put to laundry folding? It's one less thing for you to do. Tell DH and son that you need some me time (walks, odd couple of hours out) and a schedule of others taking set days with son so that you ALL end each day somewhat settled that things are getting done without you taking it all on (though you seem to be doing all the planning as well!). Did DH catch any fish on his trip before he took ill?

It seems that the women of the households are the brain trust of the family! Does that get discussed at the supper table?

Shopped for groceries with Mom-made a point to have her check dates on product packaging. Took a couple of minutes after checkout to verify prices on receipt-Mom said the tea she got was charged at more than the $3 something on the shelf and I noticed my personal care product was not charged at $3 but $4 something. So over to customer service-Mom's tea was right price but shelf card belonged to another tea product; she wanted to return it. My item was made free as the yellow tag was an old one with $3 price on it. So SCOP and refund.

So, this afternoon, before the rain came down trying to drown us, we went for a drive in the "country". This is on the site of an old brick making plant, the quarry was turned into a pond some 20ish yrs ago and now it's an eco-tourist site where they have school programs & camps for kids & adults can wander around & buy non-frugal artsy things. I live in downtown Toronto & the Brickworks is literally less than a 10 minute drive (the abundance of 'greenspace' is one of the reasons I love my hometown).

Thanks for the suggestions Ciel! Jayden has been helping me with receipt sorting and sock matching!!I am doing our company year end and he has been a help with the paper work. My husband is a little unsettled with his heart issues but it has been decided he will be fibrillated after being on blood thinners for 21 days to prevent a clot causing stroke. My next battle is getting up at 5.30 every morning to get Jayden to physio for 6:45 every morning.this will go on for a long time because of the severity of his injury, I'm crossing my fingers he will be able to drive by December, the surgeon felt that was a reasonable time line. The only good thing about the snow is that I have only had to do baking for next week at the golf course so only worked about 3 hours today, it was like a mini vacation this afternoon!!

Angela I hope the furnace is a frugal fix, I know it is going down to -4 and colder with the wind chill, I hope your temps tonight are a warmer there.

Lizzie, Calgary is just getting hammered with the wet snow, far worse than us.I am glad you have power to bake those peach pies!!! So many areas are out in Calgary, drive safely if you have to go out.

Coupongirl I have had multiple gum surgeries, I started at 22 years old, just bad genes and I can tell you they work but you will be sore,it isn't a cheap fix though, and you have to really be committed to after care, flossing etc. I now use special trays daily with a small dose of antibiotics and peroxide to keep my gums healthy, this is something new my dentist recommended for periodontal issues and I am sold, it has really helped, again very expensive to get the trays made for and the prescription cost abut 110.00 every 6 weeks.
Natalka what can I say..a bit jealous of the borscht, I love the stuff and it is one thing I have never made. However if any one received the new All you need is Cheese magazine I can testify the roasted red pepper and tomato soup recipe in this months issue is really easy and delicious, the guys loved it.
J and C i just did my filing cabinet last month but I will join in to organize my coupons etc. They have been put on the back burner for too long, last thing on the list when life gets too hectic!!Great job on the decluttering as well, hope you sell some things!

Ciel, yes my husband did bring 7 gorgeous whole coho salmon and and about 10 pounds of halibut home.We had a salmon filet on Monday night and it was amazing.

Oh J & C you can read my mind, I am terrible at filing so much so I am not sure I can commit to dealing with it. But my corner cupboard is clean and tonight I am doing the bottom cupboard as I need the bread machine accessible. Another of DHs ideas, today he made the bread to go with his own birthday dinner and it was yummy.

busy day here too. went for a walk to get some errands done.. it rained. figures.
spent the afternoon tidying up.
now im working on laundry.
im actually kinda bored with no projects anymore. however i do still have some homemade gifts i can work on for xmas.
a little early but to have it all done, wrapped and put away.. just the thought makes my head spin.
