Holiday Menu 2012-2013

What's on the menu for the holidays? Christmas, New Years Eve (parties?) and New Years Day (I know a lot of people celebrate then, too)

and whatever holiday in the meantime that you've got a menu for.

I LOVE turkey with mashed potatoes and gravy and stuffing and pie. So I will for sure be making that no matter where I am. My Pies generally are not that great so I might buy one.

New Years I will be designated driving so I'll only eat bagels all night.

Christmas Eve is our special meal - no meat, dairy, eggs -
We don't do all the 12 traditional dishes, since there are just three of us.


Pyrohy - perogies
Holubtsi - cabbage rolls
Baked fish - not sure what kind yet - my fave is whitefish, but sometimes we have salmon
Kolach - special bread
Uzvar - fruit compote
Mushroom sauce

Dessert - pampushky (kind of like a Ukr. doughnut with poppyseed or other filling); chrustyky - a fried pastry

Not sure if I will make kutia this year - it's a dish of boiled wheat with poppyseed, honey, and nuts. I love it, but it's a lot of work to do for the little bit one eats, but it's a special ritual dish (and yummy!).

... and more, of course - salad, veggies, etc.


Christmas Day we 'snack' - usually supper is a late afternoon thing, where I do cheeses and pickles, sliced meats and sausage, spinach dip baked in pumpernickel, etc. - just assorted yummies.

chinese takeout since I am working both Christmas eve and Boxing day and am not able to go home. So just me all alone and I'm going to enjoy the takeout I never order out and am always cooking/baking so this will be my treat for working so hard these next few months.

are there eggs in the dough for perogies? (assuming it's the same as pasta dough?)

Christmas we'll be at my Uncles, so we'll probably order out for new years eve (I personally just like to stay home new years eve..) and have leftovers New Years Day, unless my Mom decides to do our own turkey dinner then.

Christmas eve everyone is home so all 16 of us will go tobogganing and then come home and have Baron of Beef Dips with carmalized onions and Havarti and lots of snack foods,dips and salads.Dessert is homemade turtles, shortbread and various squares. Oh and wine..lots of wine! Christmas day we will roast a turkey as well as deep fry one and have the usual fixings...brandied cranberries, turnip puff, sweet potatoes, artichoke and mushroom salad, dressing and green beans or brussel sprouts. Dessert will be cherry cheesecake and pumpkin pie. New Years eve we will fondue and on New years day we do a huge prime rib roast with Yorkshire pudding and all the fixings. Sounds like a lot of food but it is only once a year and I try and make each person's favorite over the holidays!!

due to family complications.. things will be different this year..
for christmas eve hubby is off early.. yay. so hoping to do some take out..
for christmas day its going to be 4 us as far as i know.. im going to make the works for us..
then new years eve/day we always play games .. lots of junk and snacks to get rid of all the goodies i stocked up on..

xmas day just hubby myself( my mom) and daughter and her husband -son has to work-then we chat or play a board game after the big turkey/turnip/stuffing /mashed potatoes /pies or sometimes my son -in-law brings canollis for dessert-cant wait-baked goods too and lots of wine

It's just dh and I this year, we're not going back for Christmas, I'm going to ask a few friends over (since we're heading back to Texaz, yeah!!) I'll still serve up a turkey, cabbage rolls, mashed potatoes, stuffing and 2 veggies (to be decided later).

Last year, with the kids and all the different in-laws and outlaws, we did a Christmas eve meal where I made a beef tenderloin, roasted brussel sprouts with garlic and bacon, mashed taters, fiesta corn, homemade buns, several cheeses and picles. Then for Christmas day last year we did a nice ham, and all the usual suspects to go with it, as the family was down to 7 for that meal

I have no idea? Will be at my parents for Christmas Day dinner and my in laws Boxing Day and Christmas Eve.
I usually don't eat much....I don't like it or i am allergic to over 95% of the food

I used to work in a chinese restaurant when I was 15 and Christmas eve was one of our busiest days. You'd be surprised how many people order take out on the 24th.

It will be turkey, roast potatoes, sprouts, carrots, peas, gravy, stuffing etc here. Tofurkey for me. YUM!

New Years we have friends up and I usually make a big Indian feast, butter chicken, lamb vinadaloo, aloo gobi, chana, naan, pakora, samosa etc. Another NY fave is all appetizers and of course champagne!

I used to work in a chinese restaurant when I was 15 and Christmas eve was one of our busiest days. You'd be surprised how many people order take out on the 24th.

When I worked in a grocery store, Christmas, New Year's and Boxing Day, the deli department could not keep with the demand for rotisserie chicken and meal deals. The produce department could not keep up with the demand for prepared salads. The bakery department was overwhelmed with the baked goods requests. Ice cream flew out of the dairy department freezers.

Christmas day will be at my parents place and includes: turkey, ham (my uncle brings it - best ham cooker ever!), mashed potatoes, homemade bread, stuffing, carrots, turnip puff (mmmmm, love turnip!), coleslaw and cranberry sauce. Don't know about dessert because my grandmother will be making them.

Well, things change in two weeks - I'm sick again, and my back is sore... so I won't be making everything I planned.

For Christmas Eve supper tonight, we'll have perogies, cabbage rolls, roasted potatoes and rice, salad - and we could not find a whole whitefish or a pink salmon which I would normally bake, so we are trying something very different this year.

My son had stopped by a small grocery store on his way home yesterday, I had asked him to just pick up bread, which is made fresh every morning. I told him to check, though, on the off chance, what kind of fish they had - he phoned me from there to tell me there was a 1/2 smoked salmon - done in-house (the owner is an amazing butcher, and we've gotten very cool stuff from there before). Sure, go for it, I said. Well, it looks and smells absolutely heavenly, so I can't wait to try it tonight!
