I'm having a hard time managing my social anxiety lately. Just hearing people talk has turned into a trigger, and I'm starting to revert back to Avoidance. In a way the issue isn't the anxiety itself, it's the slippery slope that increases my depression. At least mindfulness meditation is making things easier, but taking medication again has crossed my mind.
I can definitely relate to this, and I remember I had insomnia for a solid year on one med. I hope you feel better gryphon, and that your sleep cycle returns to normal.
Yes, it definitely can be. In my personal case, my 'best' medication helped to alleviate most of my psychotic disorder, and some of my depression. The consequence was that it made me extremely paranoid, gave me a dissociative disorder, and I even started to question whether I actually existed or not. I also needed 10+ hours of sleep every night, because the pills acted as a sedative that eventually caused a great deal of exhaustion.
I quit the medication because these side effects were too much. I still live with the risk, but at this point I'm better equipped to manage it because of therapy.
The medications I tried that didn't work were much worse. The side effects ranged to permanent insomnia, to extreme levels of vertigo, to increasing my depression and suicidal thoughts. I've also known people who were sent to hospital due to side effects causing life-threatening complications. Another person I know decided to just live with the problem, simply because the side effects for every pill he tried was worse.
Despite media, government, pharmaceutical and even some health professional portrayals, medications are not panaceas. For most people, a 'good' medication helps to alleviate some of your symptoms, but solving the actual problems takes a great deal of emotional work and effort apart from the medication.
It's extremely rare to find a person where the medication created a permanent fix. The best most people can expect is taking enough of the edge off to create a strong recovery plan.Last edited by Aslan; Tue, Jun 25th, 2013 at 01:58 PM.

I was on the verge of becoming depressed when someone reached out. I told my side of the story and found out I had been living in a lie for the past many years. Now I'm recovering and doing well.

Depression is a brain disorder that can lead to much emotional anguish. I thank to God that I never suffered from such kind of serious disease which is very difficult to overcome.

It is very discouraging to find out that because of a chronic health condition I will never "get over" my depression, instead it will always need to be managed. That said, I am a true believer in miracles, and in the meantime I will take it one day at a time Lord.
