"Fall" into September Savings

Hi all,

Had a little mishap on Friday (was supposed to go in to hospital for testing, so my transplant meds were changed a bit which unfortunately led to my blood pressure crashing). Ended up with a little trip via ambulance to the emergency ward and a little less than 24 hours of entertainment from screaming/crying patients. Sigh. Working towards getting back on my feet - good thing I have a dog that likes to help me and a cat who will boss me around and make sure I behave.

Needless to say, cleaning challenges are a bit delayed. Although I still have to finish emptying the laundry closet - powers that be are coming tomorrow (happy I had a day's delay). Fun times.

Happy Tuesday.....
Getting a few things done today, clean the kitchen, clean the bathroom and doing lots of laundry, I feel I need to play catch up today, as I got nothing done yesterday.
Off to start dinner, and see what else I can get done.

They are pretty much guaranteeing frost this week, so I finished harvesting anything in my garden that was big enough to harvest and can't handle the frost. It is so sad to have to do this so early in the season. I will still diligently cover the plants that I hope will survive, but the forecast lows for this week are 3, 2, 0, 4, 3, 4...so I'm not going to hold my breath. Next week is supposed to warm up some, but I'm still not sure how much growth can take place before the cold really hits. It is currently 6C, light rain, and wind. I have three boxes with tomatoes in it, a grocery bag with my only harvest of Swischard, and another grocery bag has 2 baby zucchinis (only ones of the season), last of the peas and yellow string beans. My green onions have sprouted back up in the last few weeks. They think it is spring after the rainy week that we had in the middle of August.

Andit: that sounds like quiet the fright. Glad you are on the mend.
I am working at home today, which is always frugal. So far the lunch spending has really been reduced on my part. DH is totally on board with reducing our spending as he want to scale back at work and is starting to realize that includes how we spend now. Yesterday he dropped our cable to basic and canceled a PVR that we rarely used on the basement TV. It’s a 45.00 a month savings.

Dinner is meatloaf, the bonus of working at home as I will take break to prepare it and the kids will do the potatoes and set the table. My oldest is on a milk kick right now and I am now one of those parents that can go through 8-12 litres a week. Thankfully I pass Costco on my way home so can buy it for less there. I have also started buying it at SDM. I always found they had such a short date but when it only lasts a few days it really does not matter. This week I had a bonus point offer so I will take advantage of that. Now back to work.

I filled out a form for the local public school division to get my name added to a bunch more schools for subbing. Dh and I agreed that I am currently willing to drive up to 1hr for a day of work. I need to average 6.5days of work each month for the entire school year in order to just qualify maternity leave. I am now on the sub list for 3 Catholic schools and 23 public schools. Just because I am on their list doesn't guarantee me any work, but it does open up the option.

Sounds like everyone is having a productive day. 30 mins for me then picking up kids and heading home to hang out in the kitchen for a few hours. I'm looking forward to it. Then once youngest is bathed and in bed I will sit for a bit in my sparkly clean livingroom So happy that is done and will keep up on it.

HA i did it all by myself. I conquered our 'lazy susan' ie our walk in closet. my word the junk. all papers are now in the filing cabinet. all scarves hung on pant clippers.
clothes are now back in their drawers. sewing station is organized.
feels good to be able to walk back in their. phew. but im tired and hot no circulation in there.
now im finishing off a xmas project for our dining room table. then all craft stuff gets put in their too.
its nice and breezy out.
tomorrow ill get my shopping done. we had company today. and dh works early tomorrow. so need to get it done asap in the morning.
then.. i may have a surprise.. keep your fingers crossed again.

Very productive day, in my terms, anyways.

Got a start on making borscht - I can't do it all in one day, since I'm not making just one pot, so I prepped the beats today. I've only ever boiled them, but saw a Martha Stewart video with her mom and they roasted them - so I did that, and I'll never boil them again! You make packets with foil and parchment inside, then when cooled a bit, they peeled easily.

Lots of women these days use the processor to shred beets, but I like pieces of beets, not shreds - I find they get mushy. So I julienned all the beets - I did 16 large ones.
Husband just finished grating carrots. I'll do the rest tomorrow.
I'm thinking I have enough to make three big pots of borscht - I'll know once I get started, lol!

great tip about cooking the beets in the oven, sounds like you will be well stocked a while which is awesome!!!
