Yup they did from the start, they are separate companies legally so no different than owing 'xyz widgets co' money in their eyes

Hard to fathom. I hope this is yet another case of misinformation.

    It's true.

I was in two Targets today and both in-store Starbucks had empty shelves and their chalkboard signing reading, "Sorry, Friday, Jan 23rd is our last day. Thank you to all our customers".

I guess that means all the opened products will be thrown out...such a waste. Can't they just give them to the staffs?

I was originally going to say this was eye opening, but it seems more like eye gouging! Target's Food Bank debt was the most troublesome to me, that is just not right.

I saw that too, but, thought surely it can't be actual, food banks...I was hoping it was a company called, the food bank. What could they have purchased from a food bank?

It isn't a purchase from the food bank, they have sponsorship agreements with food banks - they got advertising etc in return so still owe the payments (which I think they were actually donating some in product to begin with because there are stories about how the food banks are the biggest losers with Target closing) on the long term agreement.

Retailers typically declare bankruptcy in Jan.

They get all their Fall & X'Mas mechandise during the holidays. Most of it is on credit & they haven't yet paid the suppliers & distributors & manufacturer's for it.

They sell this borrowed stuff during the holidays & make out like bandits. Then in Jan they throw their hands up & say ..OOPS ..we are bankrupt..we can't pay our bills anymore..we can't return either the money or goods owed to you guys either.

Its now all in charge of the courts & liquidation companies..& we are going to hide behind these lenient laws & take off.

The top CEO's & executives are going to get hefty pay checks & bonuses, for this mess.

Meanwhile all the lower 99 % of the employees are going to be laid off, and the distributors. suppliers , manufacturers , various agencies , tax guys , lease guys , property guys are going to get very little of what was owed or borrowed from them.

Oh I believe they closed last night I was hoping that throwing everything in the garbage is misinformation. For heaven's sake there is a free standing Starbucks less than a kilometer away you would hope they would get the unopened stock.
