SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT
Issued at 05:19 Friday 09 November 2018
Wintry mix of precipitation and strong winds expected late in the day Saturday into Sunday.
Snow is forecast to develop over southwestern Newfoundland Saturday morning and spread northeastwards throughout the afternoon. Coastal areas in the west and south are expected to receive predominately rain, although snow may mix with the rain at times. A transition through ice pellets and freezing rain then to rain is expected for most areas Saturday afternoon into Saturday night. The rain will taper off Sunday morning, except over the West Coast where onshore flurries are forecast to develop.
Additionally, strong easterly winds are forecast to develop over the Island late in the day on Saturday. Easterly winds are expected to be strongest along the West Coast, where wind warnings may be required. The easterly winds will accompany the snow over the Great Northern Peninsula, central Newfoundland and the west and northeast coasts of Newfoundland, reducing visibilities. Motorists are advised that a Wreckhouse wind warning has been issued for Saturday afternoon and evening.
On Sunday, very strong southwesterly winds will develop which will persist until Sunday evening before switching to strong northwesterlies on Monday.

SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT

Another intense system bringing mixed precipitation and strong winds to Newfoundland mid-week.
This system is expected to behave similarly to the one that passed this past weekend, with snow beginning Tuesday night and transitioning to rain on Wednesday morning. However, this coming system is forecast to be more intense than the last, the primary difference being even stronger winds on Wednesday and Thursday as the storm passes. Though it is too early to forecast values with certainty, wind warnings are probable for most of the Island.
Additionally, higher than normal waters levels due to a combination of storm surge and high waves and pounding surf are likely along the Northeast Coast on Thursday, especially during high tide that morning.
