My bargain radar kicked in today while I was just in the supermarket really quick to get yogurt. Suddenly a weird magnetic force was drawing me over to the meat counter...
And there it was... dinner! A beautiful peppered sirloin steak (~360 gm.) that had just been packaged the day before but had a 50% OFF sticker on it. Steak and potato dinner for two for only about $1.50/person (for the meat), and it was surprisingly good!Last edited by mcminsen; Thu, Sep 17th, 2009 at 02:01 AM.

Oh, Turkish Delight, I'm a-drooling!!!
My husband is Ukrainian, but is from Serbia - and he once in a while makes burek with phyllo and cottage cheese. I looked it up on Wiki and it seems different E. European countries have varied version of it - interesting!
Hm, he hasn't made it in a while..... maybe I can get him to soon...

Not sure if dinner is in the cards for me. I had a donair at lunch. *urp* Those always seem like a good idea when you're eating them...
Perogies, ah, I have fond memories of those. My parents had friends, the woman's parents were from the Ukraine. Sometimes we could convince her to make a batch of homemade ones...don't know how you spell it, but sounded like pat-a-hay. It was an all day affair, but DROOOL.

The 'real' word is pyrohy (peh-ro-heh') but pat-a-hay comes close! Perogies is just the anglicized form.
Yup, it takes a while to make 'em, but wow, they are great! (some of the frozen ones are passable, lol!)

My boyfriend and I are both Eastern European (he is Russian and I am Polish) so once in a while we like to eat our yummy foods. I recently made a meal that consisted of:
-Nalesniki/Blinchiki (it's kinda like crepes and you put sweetened condensed milk - my fave, jam, sour cream, caviar, or whatever you like on it and roll it up.
-Pierozki with lots of chopped fried onions and sour cream
-Salad Olivier (Russian-style potato salad)
Mmmm so good. I am craving it again, haha. Are you Polish, Natalka?
Last night I made broiled maple salmon with rice and carrots with a sweet butter sauce, so I am being lazy tonight and making tacos!
