I was in front of an elderly 'gentleman' in the Safeway checkout line. I was buying 17 items and using 11 coupons . He said to me, "They look like food stamps - if you are going to shop like that, you may as well go on welfare." I didn't think it was even worth to comment but the cashier, who is awesme with ringing in coupons, told him, "I don't think so!!"

So, if you heard this would you have said something? I felt sorry for him actually....I bought 15 orange juices, a tub of yogurt and brick of gouda cheese for $10!!!

I would have something "cute" like:
"Food stamps, wow.... you sure are giving your age away these are called C-O-U-P-O-N-S(said nice and slowly)"

    FOLLOWED BY
"This kind old man has offered to pay for my groceries because my coupons bother him" *BIG SMILE*

    Or a simple
"Saving money bothers you..... weird" *HUH*(Look puzzled) *BLINK*

    ~NEVER be embarrassed to coupon~

Older, but definitely not wiser. You got a lot of $10! Good for you

Also, that is the first time I've heard anyone in my life suggest that someone specifically CHOOSE to go on welfare. Welfare takes a lot out of the system and should be left for people who need it, and even if someone needs to coupon to survive, avoiding welfare through coupons is great.

I do think most of us here coupon though because we don't see a reason to waste money when its so easy to coupon and its basically free money on things we need

I used $10.75 worth of coupons. On hindsight, I should have asked this elderly person if he would throw a $10 bill in the garbage..... I really was taken aback at what he said b/c I would have never expected this from someone in their 70s...

I always say to people that comment on my coupons. Even cashiers.
The company's use money to print them. Therefore I use them. Why waste paper when we are all told to recycle.
The guy must been sad with his own day.
