    Winnipeg lab employee possibly exposed to ebola

    An employee at the National Centre for Foreign Animal Disease in Winnipeg has potentially been exposed to the Ebola virus. The employee was working on Monday in a lab with pigs that had been infected with the deadly virus when they noticed a tear in their protective suit.
    Officials with Canada's public health and food inspection agencies made the announcement on Tuesday.
    They said there is currently no risk to the public.
    The unnamed employee is in self-imposed isolation and will be monitored for the next 21 days, which is the incubation period for the virus. The employee was also offered an Ebola vaccine that has been used in clinical trials in Africa.
    Risk 'expected to be low'

    The employee was working in a high-security "level four" laboratory with six pigs that had been experimentally infected with the virus. They noticed a split in the suit seam after leaving the containment lab during decontamination.
    The risk to fellow employees and the community "is expected to be low," said Dr John Copps, director of the Winnipeg laboratory with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.
    People with the Ebola virus are not infectious until they show symptoms and the virus is spread through direct contact of bodily fluids, officials noted.
    The National Centre for Foreign Animal Disease is part of a federal facility that does research on dangerous and contagious disease-causing agents.
    The research being done with pigs on the Ebola virus at the facility was to help understand the immune reaction in swine.

    Schindler factory to become Holocaust museum

    Real life is often more extraordinary than the most powerful movie. Take Oskar Schindler, for example—the factory owner portrayed in the movie Schindler’s List used his insider connections and industrial savvy to save more than 1,000 Jews from concentration camps, deportation and death during the Holocaust. And now, writes the Agence France-Presse, the factory where he employed those workers has been acquired by the Czech government with the intention of turning it into a Holocaust memorial and exhibition.

    Located in Brněnec, a small Czech Republic village about 130 miles southeast of Prague, the now dilapidated factory is where Schindler sheltered nearly 1,200 Jews. Schindler, an industrialist and Nazi Party member who served as a counter-intelligence spy for Hitler in Czechoslovakia, used his business ties to stay in good favor with the Nazis while actively resisting them.
    One of Schindler's enamel factories near Krakow used the forced labor of Jews who had been pushed out of the Krakow ghetto and into Plaszow, a forced labor camp that turned out to be a temporary stop on the way to extermination camps like Auschwitz. Schindler added an essentially non-functioning armament division to the factory, convinced the SS to convert the factory into a division of the Plaszow camp itself, and then moved around 1,200 of the workers to another factory with a similar arrangement when the camp was abandoned. Schindler’s move—and the bogus production figures that he used to justify his factory’s existence—ended up saving over 1,000 Jews from the camps.
    Though Schindler’s Krakow factory is already a museum, the site in Brněnec has long been abandoned, and over the years it has become a center of controversy. As Robert Tait reports for The Guardian, the factory is in serious disrepair and was the center of several legal battles. In addition, notes Tait, Schindler, who was named one of Yad Vashem’s Righteous Among the Nations in 1993, has an ambiguous reputation in the Czech Republic, where people still remember his work on behalf of the Nazis and his reputation as a “crook” in addition to his heroic acts.

    Bulgaria turmoil as Russophile wins presidency, PM quits

    Sofia (AFP) - EU member Bulgaria headed Monday into fresh political turbulence after a former airforce commander seen as more sympathetic to Russia triumphed in presidential elections, prompting Prime Minister Boyko Borisov to quit.
    In his victory speech, Rumen Radev reiterated his opposition to EU sanctions on Russia and praised new US President-elect Donald Trump for "seeking more dialogue" with President Vladimir Putin.

    The outcome was mirrored in Moldova, a small ex-communist nation wedged between Ukraine and Romania, where the pro-Russian Igor Dodon beat his pro-European rival Maia Sandu to the presidency.

    Bulgaria is now set for months of political inertia. Borisov on Monday formally handed his resignation to parliament. An interim government will govern until fresh elections, which are not expected until March at the earliest and could well be inconclusive.

    Radev, 53, due to take office on January 22, has no political experience and was little known before being backed by the opposition Socialists to run for president.
    Like other anti-establishment politicians -- not least Trump but also populists around Europe -- he struck a chord with voters by attacking the status quo and stressing issues like national security and immigration.

    Experts also saw his victory as a protest vote at Borisov's failure to improve the lot of ordinary Bulgarians -- the average monthly is just 480 euros ($535) -- and to tackle rampant corruption.
    Radev's clear support for the lifting of sanctions on Russia and ambivalent statements about the EU, NATO and Crimea have prompted speculation that Bulgaria could lean more towards Moscow.

    6.9 mag earthquake sparks Japan tsunami warning

    A 6.9 magnitude earthquake off north-eastern Japan near Fukushima prefecture has prompted a tsunami warning of possible 3m (10ft) waves.
    The quake struck on Tuesday morning at about 06:00 local time (21:00 GMT, Monday), the Japan Meteorological Agency said.
    The depth of the quake was estimated to be around 11km (7 miles).
    In 2011, a large tsunami caused by a quake destroyed the Fukushima nuclear power plant.
    Tokyo Electric Power has been checking the plant for damage from the latest quake.
    Cabinet Chief Secretary Yoshihide Suga told a televised news conference that the water cooling system on the third reactor of the Fukushima plant had stopped working, but there were no signs of temperatures rising and no other abnormalities at other nuclear facilities.
    The government has set up a special taskforce to monitor the situation, he said.

    Mair shouted "Britain first" in the attack, but the judge said the true "patriot" was Mrs Cox, not Mair.
    Prosecutors said Mair was motivated by hate and his crimes were "nothing less than acts of terrorism".
    Mrs Cox, MP for Batley and Spen, had been on her way to a constituency surgery when she was set upon in front of two of her assistants and shocked constituents.
    Mair shot the 41-year-old with a sawn-off rifle and stabbed her with a dagger, turning on 78-year-old Bernard Kenny, who tried to stop him. In a raid of his home nearby, police found Nazi-related material.

    The jury found Mair guilty of having a firearm with intent, causing grievous bodily harm with intent to Mr Kenny and having a dagger.
    The judge gave him a whole life tariff, saying he was likely to spend the rest of his life in jail. He said the offence was so exceptional that Mair could only be released by a secretary of state.
    Mair, dressed in a dark suit and blue tie, remained impassive as the verdicts were read out, after just over 90 minutes of deliberations.

    You are absolutely correct it is a trade deal, be thankful you are not joining the EU.

    Yes, I agree that at the moment it is lower priced products for Canadians but watch this space in the months/year to come. Britain sells more to the EU than we buy from them so the weak Sterling is to our benefit. Will you buying more than you are selling?

    Now Mr Schutlz is resigning & going to return to Germany it will be fun to watch what happens next.

    That is incorrect. Britain buys CDN $40 billion more from the EU than the EU does from Britain. The weak pound is a huge detriment.

    Former Cuban leader Fidel Castro dies aged 90

    Cuba's President Raul Castro appeared on state television (Friday) to announce his brother's death.
    "At 10.29 at night, the chief commander of the Cuban revolution, Fidel Castro Ruz, died," he said, without giving a cause of death.
    "Ever onward, to victory."

    His death - which would once have thrown a question mark over Cuba's future - seems unlikely to trigger a crisis as Raul Castro, 85, is firmly ensconced in power.
    Still, the passing of the man known to most Cubans as "El Comandante" - the commander - or simply "Fidel" leaves a huge void in the country he dominated for so long. It also underlines the generational change in Cuba's communist leadership.

    The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on the death of former Cuban President Fidel Castro:

    “It is with deep sorrow that I learned today of the death of Cuba’s longest serving President.
    “Fidel Castro was a larger than life leader who served his people for almost half a century. A legendary revolutionary and orator, Mr. Castro made significant improvements to the education and healthcare of his island nation.
    “While a controversial figure, both Mr. Castro’s supporters and detractors recognized his tremendous dedication and love for the Cuban people who had a deep and lasting affection for “el Comandante”.
    “I know my father was very proud to call him a friend and I had the opportunity to meet Fidel when my father passed away. It was also a real honour to meet his three sons and his brother President Raúl Castro during my recent visit to Cuba.
    “On behalf of all Canadians, Sophie and I offer our deepest condolences to the family, friends and many, many supporters of Mr. Castro. We join the people of Cuba today in mourning the loss of this remarkable leader.”

    His statement was met with puzzlement and derision by some Americans, including Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, who is of Cuban descent.
    “Is this a real statement or parody? Because if this is a real statement from the PM of Canada it is shameful and embarrassing,” Rubio tweeted.
    Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, who is also of Cuban descent, agreed with Rubio, calling Trudeau’s remarks "disgraceful."
    In a series of tweets, Cruz suggested that Trudeau and President Barack Obama — whose own statement avoided directly criticizing Castro, although steered clear of praise — "take a min (sic) to look into the eyes of victims of communism" before "slobbering adulation on tyrants."

    With the passing of Fidel Castro, my thoughts and prayers are with the people of Cuba who continue to endure his long and oppressive regime, even after his death. Under his rule, thousands were impoverished, thousands were imprisoned and executed, and free speech, thought and assembly were curtailed or banned, all to live up to his version of 'socialism'.

    Canada and the Cuban people have had a long and warm friendship over many years. With today's news, my hope is that a brighter day will be coming for the Cuban people, where they may live in freedom and where democracy, human rights, and the rule of law are enshrined.

    Chief Putin aide's wife sparks outrage with Holocaust themed skating routine

    The wife of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s chief spokesman Dmitry Peskov has sparked anger after she performed a Holocaust-themed ice skating routine on a reality television show Saturday night. Former Olympic figure skating champion Tatiana Navka and actor Andrey Burkovsky wore striped concentration camp uniforms and yellow Stars of David for their performance on state-owned Channel 1’s “Ice Age” show, in which professional skaters are paired with celebrities, The Times of Israel reported.

    The pair skated to Israeli singer Achinoam “Noa” Nini’s song “Beautiful That Way,” which was featured in the 1997 Italian-language Oscar-winning Holocaust film “Life is Beautiful.”
    Navka posted photographs of their performance to Instagram after the show. She explained the routine was “based on one of my favorite movies” and that it was important for children to know about the Holocaust.

    ~~~~snip~~~~
    The Jerusalem Post described the performance as “chilling,” while noting that Russia’s version of “Dancing with the Stars” also featured a similar Holocaust-themed segment in April.
    Nearly 400 children rescued and 384 adults arrested in Canadian child p0rn bust
    Nearly 400 children have been rescued and 348 adults arrested following an expansive and “extraordinary” international child ography investigation, Canadian police announced Thursday.
    The three-year project, named Project Spade, began when undercover officers with the Toronto Police Service Child Exploitation service made contact with a Toronto man allegedly sharing “very graphic images” of child sexual abuse in Oct. 2010, Toronto Police Service Chief William Blair said at a press conference on Thursday.
    Police said their investigation revealed an entire child movie production and distribution company in Toronto operating via the web site azovfilms.com.
    The site was run by 42-year old Brian Way, according to police, and sold and distributed images of child exploitation to people across the world.
    Inspector Joanna Beaven-Desjardins, head of Toronto’s Sex Crimes Unit, said they enlisted the help of the United States Postal Inspection Service since many of the videos were being exported to the U.S. and began a joint investigation.
    After a seven-month long investigation, officers executed search warrants across the city of Toronto including at the business, located in the city’s West End.
    Investigators catalogued hundreds of thousands of images and videos of “horrific sexual acts against very young children, some of the worst they have ever viewed,” Inspector Beaven-Desjardins said at the press conference.
    Police seized over 45 terabytes of data from the $4-million business that distributed to over 50 counties including Australia, Spain, Mexico, Sweden and Greece.
    Royal Canadian Air Force pilot killed in CF-188 crash
    Shortly after 11 a.m. Mountain Standard Time, on November 28, a CF-188 Hornet from 4 Wing Cold Lake crashed inside the Cold Lake Air Weapons Range in Saskatchewan, not far from the Primrose Lake Evaluation Range.
    Emergency services from 4 Wing, including 417 Combat Support Squadron, responded to the crash. Tragically, the pilot, Captain Thomas McQueen of Hamilton, Ontario did not survive.
    A Flight Safety investigation will be conducted to determine the cause of the accident.
    https://www.facebook.com/RCAF.ARC/?fref=ts
    McQueen was a 10-year-veteran of the Royal Canadian Air Force with time served in Canadian military operations in both eastern Europe and the middle east. He served with the 409 and 401 Tactical Fighter Squadron at CFB 4-Wing as a flight lead.
    McQueen - known as "toast" to his peers - was engaged to be married, with a fiancé living in the Cold Lake area.
