After having 2 babies 15 months apart, I suffered from post-partum depression a few years back. My Doctor put me on EFFEXOR XR and it nearly ruined my life. It is a lot like Paxil, you cannot physically get off of this drug. PLEASE, do NOT accept this drug from your Dr. It was a huge nightmare for me, no one understood why I couldn't just stop taking it. It wreaks havoc on your body. It took me MONTHS of taking the capsules apart, counting individual pellets, reducing them by 1 or 2 pellets every couple of weeks. My Dr. retired, leaving me to find another Dr. that didn't understand. I ended up putting a package together for her about 50 pages long about how she needs to stop prescribing this medication and start educating herself on it. She was so ignorant.
If you are on a depression mediaction, I highly recommend getting this book:The Antidepressant Solution, by Joseph Glenmullen MD
Without this book, I don't know if I ever would have gotten off this terrible drug.
There is a new commercial on TV for a drug called Pristiq. It contains the same medication as Effexor - Venlafaxine. So I'd stay away from that one, too.
Sorry for the rant, I just feel SO strongly about this drug.Share the love, share your coupons

My son suffers from severe depression. I'm terribly worried about him & fear for him all the time. We have not been able to get any help. We don't have a family doctor. Every one we have approached for help tells us the same thing. "You have to go to your family doctor". Walk-in clinics, the ER, the "Mental Health Crisis Team" all just turn us away. If you don't have a family doctor you might as well lie down and die because no one cares.
So much for universal health care, eh?

I took my husband to the ER. He had been admitted once before when he was manic. But he wasn't sick enough to get admitted that time for his depression. In the end, I called his family doc in tears. The nurse was a huge b*tch and said I couldn't talk to the doc about my husband due to confidentiality, blah blah blah...in the end I did talk to him and he told me to take him to another hospital's ER when he'd be working. I did and slowly he got help.
I can't push ERs enough. For psychiatric emergencies I've always found them great. The larger hospitals have psychiatric ERs that work within the regular ER. They have a mandate to help in crisis.

That's exactly my problem. "Not sick enough". Unless he threatens to kill himself or someone else they don't give a s**t. The fact that he's either sleeping, playing video games or crying for hours on end doesn't bother them one bit. No job, no school, no friends - nothing. In the house 24/7 alone except for when I'm home. He can't even get a prescription for anti-depressents because he has no family doctor. Catch 22.

My brother was the same way until he was arrested (for something and resisting arrest) and was finally able to get into the system. Sad that it takes a criminal offense for many to get into the system. (also my brother was over 18, so even my mom couldn't do anything)

Just because you had a bad experience with Effexor doesn't mean everyone will. Everyone is different. Any drug could be dangerous but it's the risk we take to feel better. I've been on this drug in the past and need to get back on it as it did help a bit but i'm on it more so for anxiety than depression and I was prescribed the maximum dosage. I never had any withdrawal symptoms, etc.
