I interpreted Jenny's post the same way.

The trouble is that the system is too easy to abuse. Even with my case, looking at me, you would question what is wrong that I should need to be on disability (trust me, this is hardly what I dreamed of in my youth). It's only when I've overdone it that I start to walk like a drunken sailor. Unless you (the general you, not anyone in particular) knew that I spent 3 yrs re-learning how to walk, would the darn you turn to oh darn.

What I find distressing is that so many folks that I've seen when going into the disability office (on those audits) are rude and disrespectful. The first time I went in, I found the bullet-proof glass that kept the receptionist from the clients amusing. Then I saw how people behaved. Last time I was there, there were about 20 others in the waiting area. I sat near the receptionist & watched the folks. I was the only one who behaved in a remotely civil manner. Not a single greeting, please or thank you. On the occasions I'd had to visit a food bank, the behaviour was equally atrocious. I was the only one to say thank you. Everyone else was pitching a fit about the quality or quantity of food they received. More than one person threw an item that they didn't appreciate at the poor volunteer. Honestly, do such heathens deserve to be treated with any sort of respect?

Most job adverts I've seen recently want an e-mail address as well as a home address and telephone number. It seems that now having home internet access is accepted as the norm by many employers.

Just a couple of things to say about your comments.

    1. If someone on social assistance is savvy enough to download Linus onto a PS3 to surf the web, they have skills that they can offer a potential employer.

    2. It is not necessary to have home internet access to have an email address. There is free access available at public libraries and employment centres.

Thank you..I've had this piece of garbage many times in my in-box...Mostly from my family and friends in theUK..where it doesn't apply. And where many of them are or have been on the Uk equivalent of welfare for long periods of time. but they were/are different from the rest of the people who use these services.Or so they believe..

I do HR, we ask for an email address because many people will answer an email quicker than they will pick up a phone but it is far from a requirement (despite the system saying ERROR: no email added twice lol) we simply pick up the phone for those people. One of the people who just started working for us stated my email is private and will be given upon any employment, that was fine with us too and actually made us like her a little more as its clear she values her privacy and would do the same with ours.

My comment included "if someone is on social assistance"....are you telling me that your 7 and 10 year old children collect welfare? Please try to keep this friendly debate on reasonable and on topic.

As for a part time library hours, these should not affect those on social assistance, since they really don't have any other commitments and can attend at the hours the library is open. Federal employments offices have "public" computers - the bureaucrats that work in those offices have there own and don't access those in the "public" space unless it is to help someone that is looking for a job. I certainly cannot speak for Quebec, but am a firm believer in "if there is a WILL there is a way". The operative word being "WILL".

If the parent is on social assistance, then technically, any children they have are as well...

I would respectfully submit it is not very reasonable for those of us who live relatively normal stable lives to decree what those who live in entirely different circumstances should be able to accomplish with their limited resources. Not every SA recipient lives within walking distance to a public library and the cost of bus fare can be a significant challenge. To say they have absolutely nothing to do all day is a huge assumption. Yes, when there is a will there is usually a way...but there are practical obstacles that can make it very difficult for many SA recipients. I don't think it helps them or the conversation to trivialize those obstacles. There is nothing wrong with having expectations of people, and yes, in some ways the system is broken but if it were an easy fix, it would have been done by now.

<comment removed> Alot of people abuse the system and lots don't. Unfortunately there is a stigma attached to welfare and thats because of us, society. We are so quick to judge. The government is to blame..they don't help the people that live paycheck to pay check instead the help the poor and the rich. People on welfare, with kids, bring in more a month than i do...so i ask you "why would they want to get off of welfare" I sure in the hell wouldn't. They get daycare costs, food, clothing, housing, subsidy for sports and the YMCA..the list goes on and on. Guess i wish i was on welfare. Wether you are rich, or on welfare many people have drug and alcohol problems. If every person on welfare that tested positive had welfare taken away from them then we would have a much bigger problem on our hands. Lots of kids would be thrown into the system (which sometimes is not where they should be), our streets would be consumed with homeless, drug addicts. Not sure what the solution is but i do agree something needs to be done to the abusers but at the end of the day the government are the enablers.

Now many people have said and wrote this over hundreds of years but Dear Abby said it best lol

The best index to a person’s character is (a) how he treats people who can’t do him any good, and (b) how he treats people who can’t fight back.

Well here is my two cents again. If you know of someone abusing the system, report them! If you don't report them, then don't complain about the system, because you are doing nothing to fix it!
