Which is why we have an alcohol based gel in our car; every time I get into the car from shopping anywhere, or being anywhere, I use it. There are more horrible things out there than hand sanitizers. I can imagine what women think when I walk out of a public washroom without washing my hands! LOL!! I use my hand sanitizer in the car when I've finished my shopping.

Here's an interesting article, it may be a little skewed, but it sure makes one think...

Jmho, but if many of the soapy brands come from overseas, what kind of water are they using to make that dispenser soap?

Oh...and don't use the hot-air thingy to dry your hands; bacteria festers in that hot environment and you're just blowing it onto your hands. Use paper towels whenever possible.
    Paranoid, yet?

1st human trials of Canadian vaccine start in U.S.

The first human clinical trials of a Canadian-developed Ebola vaccine, VSV-EBOV, begin in Maryland today to assess the vaccine's safety and determine the appropriate dosage to fight the virus that has killed more than 4,000 people, largely in West Africa, Health Minister Rona Ambrose has announced.

The vaccine, which was developed by scientists at the Public Health Agency of Canada's National Microbiology Laboratory in Winnipeg, will be tested on 20 healthy volunteers at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research in Silver Spring, Md.

Studies in primates have shown the vaccine prevents infections, if given before exposure, and increases survival chances among those who get it quickly after exposure.

The results from the Phase 1 human trials will be completed by December, Ambrose said, although no specific date was given.

The Canadian government owns the intellectual property rights to the vaccine but has licensed the rights to a small U.S. biotech company called NewLink Genetics through its wholly owned subsidiary, BioProtection Systems, the public agency said.

The U.S. Defence Threat Reduction Agency, which is part of the U.S. Defence Department, is working with BioProtection Systems to further develop the product for use in humans.

Canada has supplied 20 vials of the experimental vaccine for use in the trial.

Amazing report by the frontline nurse in Liberia.
They go through a lot to prevent the spread of ebola and still there were 3 nurses who had contracted it.

For sure, beyond brave! I've been listening to reports over the past weeks on the radio, interviews with health workers with MSF - Doctors Without Borders - and all they are dealing with there. CBC radio overnight has some amazing programming.

This article makes a lot of good points from an ER physician. It is titled, "4 reasons this ER physician is dead scared of our Ebola response."

The few things he said that really make sense and/or stuck out at me are:

Were an Ebola patient to arrive at my hospital tomorrow, I do not feel confident in my ability to put on, use, and take off protective gear in a manner that is foolproof.
Discussing how it mimics the normal flu in it's early stages:

In its earliest days, Ebola is indistinguishable from the flu
In Ebola's later stages, it is distinctive from other flu-like illnesses by its severity of symptoms, its high mortality rate (greater than 70 per cent), and its classic hemorrhagic manifestations, with patients often bleeding from their mouths, noses, and internal organs. However, at the onset of disease, the symptoms of Ebola are completely non-specific and flu-like: usually fever, muscle aches, headache, sore throat, vomiting and diarrhea. These are symptoms I see on a regular basis in my ER throughout the year. So should we ever have a widespread outbreak, with travel history becoming unnecessary for exposure, it will be near impossible for frontline physicians such as myself to distinguish patients with early Ebola from patients with the common flu. Such a situation would make the safe practice of frontline medicine near impossible, something I fear to imagine the consequences of.
    And bottom line.

While I still believe there is no cause for a general panic over Ebola, I feel that the approach being taken at present by our public health authorities is overconfident, dogmatic, and inflexible, with an unwillingness to consider that current containment measures may not be adequate. As a front line health care worker, I feel that my own safety is already at risk, and I can only hope that not very many more of us in my profession have to become ill in order for our governments to recognize that, in the setting of one of the largest disease outbreaks in modern history, plans limited to questionnaires and thermometers at airports may be far from sufficient to protect us.

Well I think Chris Brown is a dufus to start with lol but apparently he tweeted that Ebola was the Government's way of population control. Wasn't there a big conspiracy thing about HIV/AIDS at one time too along the same lines? Now there was big outrage over the Spanish dog that was put down and there is the dog in Dallas in quarantine right now but I was reading the following article which has stated that at least one study has shown it's possible that Ebola could be transmitted from dog to human. The article is HERE.

At least one major study suggests that dogs can contract Ebola. Researchers tested dogs during the 2001 Ebola outbreak in Gabon after seeing the canines eat infected dead animals. Of the 337 dogs tested, up to 25 per cent showed antibodies to Ebola, a sign that they were infected or at least exposed to the virus. It’s unclear what the risk is to humans, though. Lab experiments in other animals suggest their urine, saliva and stool might contain the virus. That could mean that people could catch it from a dog biting them, for example.

Well since ebola was transmitted by wild animals to human, it makes some sense that it could be transmitted from human to an animal. There haven't been any evidence of that happening with dogs but ebola antibodies have shown up in a percentage of dogs in places with an ebola crisis.

    http://www.washingtonsblog.com/2014/...-airborne.html
"In 2012, a team of Canadian researchers proved that Ebola Zaire, the same virus that is causing the West Africa outbreak, could be transmitted by the respiratory route from pigs to monkeys, both of whose lungs are very similar to those of humans. Richard Preston’s 1994 best seller “The Hot Zone” chronicled a 1989 outbreak of a different strain, Ebola Reston virus, among monkeys at a quarantine station near Washington. The virus was transmitted through breathing, and the outbreak ended only when all the monkeys were euthanized. We must consider that such transmissions could happen between humans, if the virus mutates."

On a brighter note, the Canadian vaccine was 100% effective in preventing ebola when tested in animals. Trials on humans have begun and the results should be available in December.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan, who is a pediatrician, have donated $25 million to the Centers for Disease Control Foundation to aid in combating the Ebola epidemic in West Africa.

Hand sanitizer is good for bacteria but not as effective on viruses.
I welcome every opportunity to wash away germs and viruses I get when using the public washrooms.
    I'm a bit of a germaphobe too.
After reading your link though, I might start carrying my own soap now not just sanitizer.
