I bit the bullet and bought some hamburger for about $4 a pound today, and made some chili in the crockpot, with lots of mushrooms, onions and peppers, black beans and chick peas, and a couple cans of Alymer Accents chili tomatoes. Very tasty, made some homemade bread too (dough made in my bread machine). DS doesn't much like chili, so I made him a piece of salmon.

I cooked up a double pack of lean ground beef from the freezer. I took about 1/3 of the meat and turned it into my meat taco sauce to go with marble cheese melted over nacho chips, with sour cream and salsa. The rest of the meat will still be turned into chili and shepherd's pie.

We had company so DH made his BBQ chicken, with potatoes on the grill and stir fried Indian cabbage-dessert was carrot cake with cream cheese icing. We probably don't need any more calories for 24 hrs!

Chili here, too! Made mine with ground pork - and added whatever I could find: diced carrots, onions, kernel corn, barley, cauliflower, can of pork 'n beans.

For the tomatoey part I would normally add a can of whole tomatoes, but my husband had mistakenly bought a package of 'cocktail' tomatoes (greenhouse, on a vine?) instead of field tomatoes which I like for sandwiches. Well, once I cut into those tomatoes they were very juicy, so I just cut them up and used them in the chili. However, very pricey at $5! (I didn't give him too much flak, after all he did do the shopping...) Also added some tomato paste mixed with water, chili powder, s+p, garlic powder.
It was thick and rich and yummy - but no leftovers, even though I made about 3/4 of a dutch oven! I think my son was sad about that, none to take home. (however, I loaded him up with all sorts of other goodies to take).

There was a bit of leftover linguini, so cut that up fine and added to the finished chili, which we ate with fresh bakery bread from Safeway (four loaves for $4!).

Was suppose to go to my grandmother's yesterday for dinner but didn't make it so she already called this morning and has a pile of leftovers saved (jiggs dinner) I love those leftovers, I just hash it up in a frying pan ..meat, veggies, pudding, etc...it's so good...I'm glad too as we have another big storm hitting the east coast (NFLD) have a feeling we could lose power with this one!

Tonight's dinner is a mystery, we are both working today and nothing was taken out. So it will have to be something we can cook from frozen and is quick.
