We had cabbage rolls (to those of you with Eastern European, holubschi) and perogies (again, pyrohy). Wish us Finns could make tasty morsels like that, but alas, we are stuck with delicacies such as fish head soup (kalamojakka)

I'm Ukrainian, so obviously love pyrohy and holubtsi (cool that you know those words!). Just did a google tour of Finnish recipes - some sound just yummy!
Interestingly, when I was growing up my parents were huge herring fans. My Baba used to make a herring sauce once a year to have with the meatless Christmas Eve Holy Supper - my mom also later made it, and I remember it being SO yummy. I have the recipe but haven't made it myself - it's very time-consuming, so I've always procrastinated trying it. But you know, my teen son worked a few summers at the Norwegian Folkfest pavilion here in the summers, and totally fell in love with herring and onion on rye bread, so I know he wouldn't be averse to trying herring sauce (he loves all types of fish).
You know what, I'm GOING to make that sauce this Christmas!!!

Well...it was going to be whatever DH felt like making when he got home from work tonight (its been one of THOSE days)...but he's off the hook, since the world's greatest neighbour just dropped off a casserole for us! The only downer is that it means pasta for the third night in a row. Lol.

Tonight, we ordered in... I'll spare you the details except it was fattening, fattening and fattening plus artery clogging! Did I mention it was fattening?
