Nov. 5 is Guy Fawkes night in England. He tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament and he was burned at the stake. Everyone in the neighbourhood would make a "guy". Children would wagon it to their neighbour's asking for "A penny for the guy." (Something like Halloween here) Then a big bonfire would be built and the "guys" would be burned. Pretty gorey! But then, so is Halloween, I guess. So you still celebrate here-that's cool!

Guy fawkes was hung not burned. He was supposed to be hung, drawn and quartered.
Some idiots burnt Grenfell Tower in effigy this year.https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-london-46099562
A group of people who put a model of Grenfell Tower on a bonfire acted in an "utterly unacceptable" way, the prime minister has said.
A video shared on social media shows a cardboard model of the tower being set alight by a laughing crowd.
Theresa May tweeted: "To disrespect those who lost their lives at Grenfell Tower, as well as their families and loved ones, is utterly unacceptable."
Scotland Yard said the Grenfell Tower investigation team is making inquiries.
Housing Secretary James Brokenshire said the group's actions were "beneath contempt".
A total of 72 people were killed in the devastating blaze at the west London tower block in June 2017.

Lewes is the place to go for bonfire celebrations
https://www.independent.co.uk/news/u...-a8617901.html
The picturesque market town north east of Brighton regularly attracts as many as 80,000 spectators every 5 November to see the costumed processions, fires and firework displays organised by its six bonfire societies.
The most famous aspect of the Lewes festivities - likened to Mardi Gras in New Orleans - is of course its custom of burning effigies of hated public figures, the societies choosing celebrities who have consistently made headlines for the wrong reasons throughout the past year to go up in flames.
In 2017, the townsfolk laid waste to a papier-mache model of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un strapped to a rocket alongside Donald Trump, after the former’s defiance of the international community over missile testing drew him into a game of nuclear brinkmanship with the White House.
Tableaux of Harvey Weinstein and Theresa May as Britannia were also torched.
Previous topical Guys in Lewes have included a boxer-shorted David Cameron holding a pig, Jeremy Clarkson, ex-FIFA president Sepp Blatter, Vladimir Putin, Bashar al-Assad, Muammar Gaddafi, Angela Merkel and Osama bin Laden.

Thanks, Darth. As I was typing it, I was thinking that burning wasn't the way he died. I didn't realize that other "hated figures" were targeted on Guy Fawkes night.
I'm in Canada now because of a statement my mother made as we were watching the Guy Fawkes festivities, that she would like to go back to Canada. By Remembrance Day, my dad had sold our house, quit his job and we were on the boat headed back here. (He never wanted to go back to England after they had immigrated here, but my mum was really homesick.) We spent 2 years in England and then back we came on the nasty November Atlantic!
